Of course it's going to hurt. You put a hole in your head.
To prevent infection, clean the hole with rubbing alcohol everyday. If you notice swelling and redness around the hole then it's infected and you'll have to see a Dr.

First off I'm sorry that some folks are a bit harsh here responding to your questions. I try to take people seriously here because really, where else can you ask questions that you don't really want to take a doctor and hope for some sound advice. I guess that's the trade-off though, the Dr. can't laugh in your face or call you names, s/he can only treat you.
So to get on with it...
1. Yes I do think that it should still hurt. I got my ears pierced (professionally) a few years ago and I'm a ninny when it comes to pain, even needle pricks. But seeing as you did it by yourself, yeah I'd expect a bit of pain. Plus you didn't say if you sterilized your needle/whatever you used to put the hole? 2. Yes I do think that laying on it would hurt. When I got mine done professionally they hurt to lay on but I figured that was also because I'd never had any other holes in my head. Any other piercings (professionally done) to compare the pain to?
3. To keep it from getting infected, either you can go to the mall and go into Claire's, they have an Antibacterial Ointment Liquid thing... that you just put on there, spin the earring, clean it off... Costs about $3.00 for the bottle. (Small&Large bottles avail.) OOoor... Hydrogen Peroxide is always the less painful Germ Killer of choice, next to Rubbing Alcohol.
4. Puss, extreme redness, swelling, and pain are signs of infection.
My mom told me about piercing her own ears all the time, and offered to do mine for me as well. She's fine. I think you just really need to focus on keeping it CLEAN. (Like get Obsessive about keeping it clean...)
Hope it works out good for ya. Oh and that it looks good too!
Take it easy,
miR:)

Not too smart, I hope you at least used a sterilized needle to pierce it. If it gets really swollen in the next couple days it may be infected and then the best thing to do is get to a hospital and some antibiotics. It's normal for it to hurt the first couple days, however keep a watch on it. The signs of infection are it getting swollen, oozing fluid, or turning really red.
Best things to do to avoid infection is if you to keep a sterile gauze on it for a day or so. Usually it's a better idea to goto an actual piercer to get your piercings done. It's a cleaner environment for the most part and they know what they're doing.

Ok, gonna tell you my age here..........but back in the 1970's when I was in high school, we all pierced our own ears because there were no such stores as Claire's to go have them done.
Use peroxide to clean your ear several times a day. That will kill any bacteria or infection that may grow. Keep a good earring in your ear, one that you can turn frequently. And make sure it is surgical steel or 14 karat gold. Not gold plated either or sterling silver. Those have other metals in them that can cause irritation to open skin.
It will be painful for a few weeks until it starts to heal.
But as long as you follow my instructions, it will heal fine. If it doesn't, you may have to let it heal without an earring and have it done again later.

Get some peroxide or alcohol and keep it clean..that is most important....always use a clean q-tip or cotton ball to clean it with..........Hopefully the earring and needle that you used were sanitized....if not...don't worry just keep it clean.....it should take a week to a couple of weeks before it heals completely...it will hurt some and be uncomfortable to lay on for a few days.....if it turns colors such as green or purple after it's been in a week....I would take it out or see a doctor...

i pierced my ear with a sefety pin a few months ago and it never got infected, it is fine. Yes, it did hurt the first few days, maybe even a week after i did it, but it was bearable. I just cleaned it with a mild soap and water every day (i left it in when i cleaned it) and a few months later it is fine, and it never got infected. Just make sure you keep it clean, and it should be all right.

I did mine myself with an earing, besides the reality that it hasn't have been given contaminated i would not advise it in case you ought to however sparkling it in the past and after and proceed to scrub it, you would be ultimate off going to a professional, ear piercings are no longer that costly and could be complication unfastened if completed wisely, wish this facilitates

Honestly!!! You idiot, why on earth did you do it??
1. Yes of course it's going to hurt. You've inflicted an injury on yourself.
2. I'd be surprised if it didn't hurt to lie on it.
3 + 4. Get it checked by a doctor.
5 (although you didn't ask:) Give your piercings plenty of time to heal. DON'T try to keep them open with studs or rings. If you still want piercings after that, go to someone who knows what they're doing!

Put rubbing alcohol on a Q tip and keep cleaning around the stud until the wound stops leaking. What oozes out will form a hard crust. It seems to be infected.
Put polysporin on the area and in the holes and on the stud.
Keep applying the polysporin!
