A friend of mine has been hospitalized with Goodpasture's Syndrome. I'm having trouble finding out what the treatment options and chances of full recovery are for this disease.

What can you tell me about the disease besides that it's an autoimmune disorder that targets the lungs and kidneys?

First of all I would like to thank everyone for all the suggestions and valuable advices they have given me. I'm very grateful for them. I have another question. My mother is suffering from bilestones for three years by now. She rejects having an operation on it, as for many doctors told her, (as well she has read it in books) that as long as she has her bile, which does have it's own function, it's better to keep it, avoid having any operations on it, and leave operation to the last resort. Other doctors told her the completely opposite, and suggested her to have an operation on it as soon as possible (by throwing her bile out as for it could cause serious complications) I have heard of many nature-healing techniques such as FOOT REFLEXOLOGY, or various tea types, or DIETS that could ease her pain, and help her bile to get cured and get rid of her stones. Do you have any experiences on this field? What is the best way of curing a "stony bile" without having operations on it?

I've been having symtoms of what I think may be an ulcer or IBS lately. I was tested for an ulcer and all kinds of bacterial stomach infections and everything came back fine.

My doctor scheduled me to come in and do a barium test for IBS tomorrow morning.

Is this standard procedure for testing for IBS? What else could they possibly be looking for?
I thought there was no positive way to identify IBS for sure.

Serious answers only please! My mom is in dialysis, not a candidate for transplant. Also has CHF,COPD & ALS. All of this has been found out in the last 6 months! ALS just 1 month ago! Each week brings a new disease! Now therapy too!! Why? She can't walk, she can't help us get her up from bed, potty, wheelchair, vehicle?! She is only 68, and now her weight is only 94 pounds and her mind isn't working like mom! Blank stares, asks the same questions, spine sticks out an inch. Just started protein powder in malts per dialysis. It's run to dialysis 3 x's a week for 3-4 hours, therapy 1/2hr., Dr. appt.'s, new Dr's. Plus, getting in & out! She is beat!! Dad is beat - he's got a bad back (rods), and in pain too! NO to nursing home from both! It's like we WANT to put her in one,we don't, we research each, get meds, foods, etc. What else can we do? Any kind of suggestions on where we should turn would be greatly appreciated from someone in the "Educated Medical Field"

I have muscle weakness, pain in most joints & depression ever since I was misdianosed with Lupus. I started out with 17mg of prednisone & went all the way up to 500 mg over a 6 month period. The doctors were trying to convince my husband to institionalize me cause they said the lupus had probably entered my brain & there would be no coming back for me.
My husband told the doctor's he wouldn't consider doing so because he felt the reason I was hallucinating was caused by the bad reactions I was having to the 15 medications they were prescribing me,and he insisted on further tests.
I had to go through a MRI, Brain Scans, two spinal taps& numerous other tests, all which came back negative.
I now been dianosed with fibromalgia. My whole life changed ever since that 1 st week of medications, I just hope there is some way to reverse the damage. It's almost been a full year since I stopped the poisons that were prescribed to me.

Just letting everyone understand that the answers here appear to be some wierd game where answers are scored. Well be aware that medical questions here are not necessarily being answered by medical professionals and you should have any medical problem checked out by the appropriate professional.

My mom has alzheimer's. She had a small stroke yesterday called a TIA. At the emergency room we found out that her right carotid artery is significantly blocked which puts her at high risk for a stroke. Should she undergo surgery with its risks; infection, bleeding, stroke, and death? If the surgery is successful in removing the blockage it will lengthen her life and she will live with alzheimer's longer. Her quality of life as an alzheimer's patient is very poor to put it nicely. Can anyone help me with this ethical question?
