An infection starts in another area and if it goes untreated or treated with the wrong antibioitic or depending where the infection is it can seep into the blood stream. Say you have deep cut that you thought was nothing and ignored it. Bacteria could enter the cut and cause an infection. The infection can get so deep into the skin that it could go into the blood stream or the bone (called osteomylitis). I have seen kids get a positive blood culute from an ear infection, urinary tract infection, and even a sore on the bottom of the foot. Bottom line, keep cuts clean, take all your antibiotics if a doctor prescribes it and call the doctor for fevers, redness, swelling or increased pain. All signs an infection can be present. Hope your friend it is better.

My mother got an infection in her bloodstream called Sepsis. It starts out as a regular infection, such as an ear infection or skin infection. Then when the immune system is broken down and weak it just moves its way through the body until it has eventually gotten to the blood. Hope my answer is of help, and I hope your friend is better soon. :)

The same way you get any infection: contamination of the blood by an infectious organism. Often happens during operations, but if an infection an almost any part of the body is ignored, it can eventually get into the bloodstream.

It is called sepsis.
Sepsis is a severe illness caused by overwhelming infection of the bloodstream by toxin-producing bacteria.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors-
Sepsis is caused by bacterial infection that can originate anywhere in the body. Common sites include the following:
The kidneys (upper urinary tract infection)
The liver or the gall bladder
The bowel (usually seen with peritonitis)
The skin (cellulitis)
The lungs (bacterial pneumonia)
Meningitis may also be accompanied by sepsis. In children, sepsis may accompany infection of the bone (osteomyelitis). In hospitalized patients, common sites of infection include intravenous lines, surgical wounds, surgical drains, and sites of skin breakdown known as decubitus ulcers or bedsores.
The infection is often confirmed by a positive blood culture, though blood cultures may be negative in individuals who have been receiving antibiotics. In sepsis, blood pressure drops, resulting in shock. Major organs and systems, including the kidneys, liver, lungs, and central nervous system, stop functioning normally.
A change in mental status and hyperventilation may be the earliest signs of impending sepsis.
Sepsis is often life-threatening, especially in people with a weakened immune system or other medical illnesses.

It usually starts with an infection somewhere else in your body that goes untreated for too long...This allows the infection to get into your bloodstream.
I hope your friend is getting treatment, and gets better soon.
