There is a stinging pain with the anesthetic needle and the anesthetic being injected. The biopsy needle may be felt as a deep pressure and dull pain. This pain is sometimes felt in the shoulder.

I perform liver biopsies everyday. It really depends on the doctor and their method as to whether or not you will be knocked out. The ones I do, the patient only receives a local anesthetic in the area of the biopsy and then a needle is placed into the liver to get a tissue sample. The liver itself has no nerves that are pain receptors. The whole thing takes about 30minutes and all of my patients think of it as a simple procedure. Often the worry ahead is bigger than the actual thing.

Talk to your doctor and ask questions. He will be happy to help you prepare in any way possible.

You will feel sore from the biopsy cause they will have to perform sugery to remove the tissue. A small incision on the abdomen and thus the biopsy can cause discomfort because of the tissue damage. Most painful part may be the anesthetic shots and recovery afterward. More than likely you will be heavely medicated but I doubt you will be completely unconsious. The doctor will also more than likely show you a video and go through with you, the dangers and draw backs of such a procedure. Ask your doctor before you do anything.
