"Sen. Barbara Boxer had been chair of the Senate's Environment Committee for less than a month when the verdict landed last February. "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal," concluded a report by 600 scientists from governments, academia, green groups and businesses in 40 countries. Worse, there was now at least a 90 percent likelihood that the release of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels is causing longer droughts, more flood-causing downpours and worse heat waves, way up from earlier studies."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20122975/site/newsweek/

How can anyone use this pretense to show one's point as being conclusive?

600 scientist from 40 countries = 15 scientist per country.
15 per country from gvmt, academia, green groups, and business = >4 per group per country.

How hard is it to find 4 people who either believe or profit in some way from the threat of global warming?

And why would anyone use a political committee to show scientific proof?

Imagine, for a moment, that it had been discovered that global warming had absolutely nothing to do with humans. It was a natural change in the environment caused by forces beyond our control. You knew that there was NOTHING that we as a sepcies could do about it, that we were TOTALLY IMOPTENT. You knew that the effects on the earth were only going to increase, and that we as an animal WERE going to suffer terrible hardships in the near future, but not potentially fatal hardships for perhaps another 3 or 4 generations. Would you a) Tell the truth, which could well result in mass panic, the collapse of society and anarchy or b) Hide the truth, and allow people at least the illusion that they could do something about it in order to stave off social unrest?

.
Bush has called for greater reliance on technology to combat global warming. Although early in his first term, he had insisted that the science of what causes global warming was not yet settled, more recently he has been less questioning of a link between human activity and higher global temperatures, and supportive of programs to tackle the problem.

Refer to the graph plotting the CO2 levels in the Vostok Ice Cores - http://www.mongabay.com/images/external/2005/co2_var2.jpg

It is clear that there is less CO2 today than during the peak CO2 readings at anytime in the past, long before the industrial era.

The spike shown in the picture occurs in the future and is only a guess.

A close up of the chart shows that CO2 at present is declining.

Even the worse case in this graph has co2 levels rising 100ppm or just 0.01%

An increase of 100ppm means 999,900ppm remains unchanged.

Put that in perspective. On a 100 yard football field, 100ppm of the length of that field is a whooping thickness of a shoestring.

And for this people are running around in a panic? Please, tell me this just isn't just mass hysteria!

Not a media article, we know silly things are said there. Not someone's blog. Not a paper that says the Sun is more important than the IPCC says. Not a paper that you interpret as saying it's the Sun.

There have been plenty saying unequivocally it's not (mostly) the Sun. For example:

Recent oppositely directed trends in solar
climate forcings and the global mean surface
air temperature, Lockwood, Frohlich (2007), Proc. R. Soc. A, doi:10.1098/rspa.2007.1880

"Our results show that the observed rapid rise in
global mean temperatures seen after 1985 cannot be ascribed to solar variability, whichever of the mechanisms is invoked and no matter how much the solar variation is amplified."

So I'm looking for a paper that says unequivocally 51% or more of the warming in the last 20 years or so is due to the Sun. There have been a few, but they've all been conclusively refuted.

People keep saying "It's the Sun" with no proof. Show me some unequivocal proof.

I've been reading websites about global warming (fun...), which all talk either in terms of parts per million (ppm, currently approximately 380 ppm globally) or emissions in metric tons.

What I don't understand is, how many metric tons of carbon dioxide equal one of those ppm floating around in the atmosphere? As a bonus question, how much emissions in metric tons do people say is sustainable at X number of ppm in the atmosphere? I've read that in the past (prior to the industrial revolution) it was about 300 ppm...

Hopefully that makes sense.

I've actually recycled more, using paper instead of plastic. But conservation, is the key people, and so I've conserved more too, trying to recycle what I use daily at home.
