Whether people like it or not - Although the greenhouse effect is a natural process and is a major reason for why life on this planet is possible, there is a degree to which anthropomorphic (human-caused) forces are acting on the Earth's complex climate system and amplifying global warming. All scientists agree that this is occurring, what the big debate in the science community is how much humans are contributing to this. Any percentage, however, is not good at all.
At this point, it is impossible to prevent global warming. If we immediately halted all CO2 production, the climate feedback mechanisms will still continue to cause the global temperature to rise for many years to come. So, the task now is to reduce these emissions NOW so that the temperature does not get as high as it will in the future if we continue at TODAY'S rate. Everyone's suggestions so far are pretty good. Now if only everyone on this planet can actually start committing to something...
Some of the things I personally do are: drive fuel efficiently, control the thermostat, and replaced all my lightbulbs to CFL's.

As an individual there a lot of small things you can do. If everyone did them it would make a big difference. Even if you don't "believe" in global warming all these things are also good for the local environment and economy.
Drive slower, drive less
Reduce your trash - eat out less, use fewer paper towels and toilet paper.
Keep the thermostat higher in the summer and lower in the winter and just turn the air off when you can in the spring and fall.
Eat less beef, and more locally produced veggies and fruits
Reduce consumerism - reduce purchases of all the goofy stuff we all buy and later wonder why.
Be an advocate - Don't be shy about your opinions. You don't have to be a left wing alarmist. I'm not. I'm not even convinced global warming isn't being overblown. I still do what I can though to be more conscious of the things I do and the impact they have.

I think it's a little late to talk about prevention... it's happening.. the question is how do we lessen the effects on our way of life and on the environment and how do we adapt to the future.
