There was an earthquake in Japan this morning which caused damage to a nuclear power plant there. The Associated Press article included this statement:

"The quake triggered a fire in an electrical transformer and also caused a leak of radioactive water at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant, the world's largest in terms of electricity output.

The leak was not announced until the evening, many hours after the quake. That fed fresh concerns about the safety of Japan's 55 nuclear reactors, which supply 30 percent of the quake-prone country's electricity and have suffered a long string of accidents and cover-ups."

I've noticed a number of posts here and comments elsewhere saying the only answer to global warming is nuclear power. But to me that seems like leaping from the frying pan into the fire. Have people already forgotten Chernobyl and Three Mile Island? Everyone says "It's safer now." Then what happened in Japan?

Burning one gallon of gasoline produces 19.6 pounds of CO2. Ethanol isn't much better, it produces 18.9 pounds of CO2 per energy equivalent to fossil fuel. What are the near-term alternatives (5-10 years) and what type of gallon-to-CO2 savings do they offer?

I recently ordered an electric bicycle:

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200333249_200333249?cm_sp=Customer%20driven-_-Recently%20Viewed-_-Product%20Page

for my commute to and from work. It's about 13 miles each way and takes me about an hour on my regular hybrid bike. Making this ride twice a day can wear me out by the end of the week, particularly since I often have to go against a stiff headwind. Plus it's gotten as hot as 108°F this summer during my ride home.

Basically I'd like to cut down on the time and work it takes to make this trip, while still getting exercise and minimizing my greenhouse gas emissions. I should be able to recharge the batteries at work, so that will prevent them from getting discharged much more than halfway. I did some research, and this particular bike seemed fine and is relatively very cheap.

So I was wondering if anyone with some electric bike experiences had any tips about electric bikes and biking.

By global warming I mean, not that the earth is not getting warmer by some degree, but the dire predictions of Al Gore, etc. and the accusation that humans alone are causing climate change.

When can we stop from using plastic packaging for products in the market?...We have already done a great deal of change at the restaurants - by using to-go boxes.. recycling plastic containers at the groceries/stores...

Who cares if climatologist peer review findings? What good is that? Shouldn't their studies be given to other disciplines to be tested and verified?

What do you think the results would be if UFO-olgist peer reviewed their work? I'll bet they will conclude that UFO's really exist.

What will be the results of Para-psychologist peer review? Any chance that they will think that ghost and spirits don't really exist?

So why are climatologist given such a pass on their findings? If they are correct, then let other disciplines review their work. Somehow, I think they need to keep a tight reign on their data, and not let others see what they are doing.

Why do you put a gold standard on peer review? It's nothing but BS!

Aparently a nuclear power station was damaged and there is a radiation leak. I thought that Japan had a no nuclear policy because of the two atom bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the war.

Algore promised us more and stronger hurricanes would occur because of so called "global warming", but ever since he made that claim, the number of hurricanes have dropped to almost none.

Does this mean that Algores beliefs were just hyped up as a way to scare us? And if that is true, what other claims have Algore and the "global warming" crowd exaggerated to scare us to believing that "global warming" is real?

3. We can eliminate the poor if the rich will pay their fair share? Clinton taxed the crap out of the successful, we still have poor.
4. It’s the stingy DR. Fault that everyone can’t afford to have insurance. Let’s try to be like the UK, maybe we can get our own group of socialized terrorist to “heal us” 5. That’s not a baby, it’s just a blob of tissue. While the child screams and tries it best to except the butcher’s blades in the abortion mill. 6. The spotted owl is too important to damage its native home. What about the ones building their nest in the “native” satellite dishes?
7. A condom in high school will make all the problems go away. If not we got a number for a good abortion DR. But my favorite--- “we are going to have the most ethical and transparent congress the people have ever had” Ms. Polozyi.

should be allowed to go into production it should undergo environmental analasyis to determine its future viability, environmental impact and its recycling capacity. It should be able to be made with no environmental consequences, 100% fully recyclable at the end of its life and totally environmentally benign throughout its life. In other words a fully compliant cradle to grave philosophy.

The planet cannot deal effectively with the polution and waste currently generated. What are your views?
