I've read that corporations are using an increasingly larger amount of fresh water for industrial purposes and dumping an increasingly larger amount of waste products into the fresh water supply.

I've also been told that underground water tables are dropping, desalinization projects are uneconomic and would threaten the fishing industry, and damming rivers prevents sediments from being washed out to farmlands and pulls salt-water higher upstream.

Is there reason to believe these problems real? If not, why are people worried about them? If so, can anything be done to help the situation?

I am studying Global Warming. I easily found a pretty good annual time series of global average temperatures going back to 1860. I am trying to do the same for two variables: 1) carbon dioxide concentration and 2) carbon dioxide emission. The best I found was annual data going back to 1956 of carbon dioxide concentration at Mauna Laua (or whatever it is called) a volcano and observation station in Hawaii. But, that is way too short of a time series. Can your guys help?

CO2 is one of the culprits in global warming however there are two other sources 1) heat produced by the ever increasing automotive engines (they are cumulative) and 2) population growth which doubled from the early 70's to 6 Billion now. Each human and animal increases it's thermal output until death. So, how much do we add to global warming?

Ok so I know organic milk is ultra high temperature (UHT) pasturized which sounds like the primary reason for this observation. But please include in your answer why the UHT process is only applied to organic milk? What about UHT makes it "organic" (it sounds awefully "inorganic" to me, better yet what then does it mean to be "organic milk")? And finally if it isn't the UNT process itself that makes the milk organic then why don't all milk producers use UHT to extend the shelf life of their product (I'd suspect this process allows for longer shipping distances, less logistics, and generally the ability to get more good product to the customer for less money, not to mention less wasted product at grocery stores). Only a complete answer will "win."

Because if you think about it, most polar ice is actually floating on water, and if ice displaces more liquid than it actually holds even when floating. So surely the water level would actually remain the same?

Energy conservation is high on the agenda at the minute - does an electrical appliance (lets say a kettle) that shows no obvious sign of being on (lights etc) still consume electricity if the plug is at the "on" position ?

Press coverage attempts to be "balanced" by giving too much attention to dissenting opinions. The overwhelming evidence, concluded by international scientists, supports the claim that global warming exists and is harmful.

I recently watched a documentary, and at the end, there was a comment along the lines of:

"How would you feel if you had to look your great grandchild in the eyes and tell them 'we knew this was going to happen, but did nothing to stop it'?"

That really touched me! I do my bit, solar power, low consuption light bulbs etc... but when I talk to other people about it, they don't seem to care. Their answer is "A few low-consumption bulbs won't stop the problem."

YES - it will!! IF we all do it!

Give it a try, it won't harm you, but not doing it could really harm future generations! Think of your kids, and their kids etc...

This is a HUGE worldwide problem, and I wish governments and large companies would also come together to try to at least resolve some of the problems golbal warming will entail.
