I am a sophomore in a US high school with a couple questions.
I love language, and am currently studying French, Finnish, Anglo-Saxon, and Latin, and I wish to go forward with language and linguistics. Plus, there are several more languages I wish to study.

1. What does it mean to study linguistics in college, and what is a linguistics degree? Does it mean learning foreign/dead languages, or just the science of phonetics, syntax, etc. of language in general?

2. What jobs could I get with a degree in linguistic, besides translator (a job soon to be replaced by machines)?

3. What are some universites (abroad, or in the US) with amazing Linguistics/language departments?

PS: no Wikipedia articles please, I've seen them all.

Thank you all, and God bless.
Z

I've never done one of these before and I'm just wondering what exactly are colleges looking for in one of these. How can I make my statement stand out from others? Any help is greatly appreciated. The college I'm applying for is UIC in chicago. Thanks.

I always get good grades and work hard on my classes, but I wonder, is my bachelor degree going to be worth the same as the bachelor degree of a classmate who barely passes his/her classes in the real world? I would think they should, but they probably dont, I dont know. What are your thoughts?

I have never taken a night class! I was not interested until I seen that that class is only one night a week compared to the three days a week at eleven that I was going to be taking it. I just really don't want to fool with a long night class! What would you do?

I always say to myself I won't be nervous and I'm usually not right up until 30 seconds before I start.

I don't think I specifically have a fear of speaking in front of a small class because I don't mind besides the fact that I'm get so nervous right when it starts
