At age 47, I am working toward a bachelors degree in information science with a focus on programming. I also have an infant business going and work full time for someone else. My question is this: is it even worth it, at this point in my life, to persue a college degree? Who would hire a 49 year-old programmer fresh out of college? I have over 20 years in the IT industry, mainly on the hardware side. I am also actively growing a business in robotics and internet properties development.

I am finding myself with too much to do and very little time to do it in. Should I focus on the business or the education? Which one has more potential (at my age) for financial gain? I loathe working for other people, but may need a college degree to maintain my employability.

The posibilities are endless for me, but I can't go in all directions.

Any worldly bits o' wisdom out there?

this year in community college, and i was left with a 0.76, [out of 21 credits, im not dumb, i have a good excuse], im hoping to get out of there at the end of the fall 2007 semster and be at a 4 year school by that winter, and i need a 3.0 to even put myself in a catagory where I can compete with state schools

Is there anything I can do, ANYTHING, study habits, extra classes (even though i dont have the time or money) anyone who went through the same thing and came out on the other side...im really desperate, and im serious about school, not one of these losers that goes b/c their parents make them!

SERIOUS answers please!

I'm worried that the dissertation is going to take YEARS to finish. Have any of you received your Ph.D.? How long did it take you? Were you satisfied with your dissertation or are you basically finished when your graduate comittee says it's good enough?

Don't get me wrong- I love learning. However, it seems to me, from my own views and other people's experience- that university is just a waste of time and money. A corporate establishment that cons you into spending tens of thousands of dollars and four or more years of your life - and for what? A diploma that is useful for achieving success in the job world. Aren't there other ways of learning and shouldn't wisdom and success be measured by other things than what a piece of paper says?
