Peter: I'll handle it, Lois. I read a book about this sort of thing once.
Brian: Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't nothing?
Peter: Oh yeah.

Most colleges nowadays almost require as part of the registration process for a student to have a LAPTOP Computer -- and they come already with wireless internet connections, usually at least a CD burner (and most with Combo Burner Drives), and most come with some capability to read Flash Cards as well.

My experience comes in when my Teenager enrolled Dual Enrollment (High School part of the Day -- College the other part of the day), and Wireless is EVERYWHERE -- I would sit in the library at the College (she was under 16 when she started), and read my e-mail, do my personal work (I am Retired Military, and a Financial Manager/Cost Estimator), and just plain have fun -- I had a digital camera that I enjoy using, and also enjoy working with Digital Photo Processing Software.

I would expect to see a bill between $1300 and $1700 for a current Laptop, and the associated Software which most instructors will require their assignments to be produced in (meaning Microsoft Office Software Suite, Get a Good Upgraded Firewall/Internet Security Suite, and any Speciality Computer Applications needed).

It is up to you, the college user, to research the computers offered, and to make comparison shopping part of your research process. Sometimes, using the College Bookstore to get the Educational Discount is beneficial when purchasing, sometimes not. It is also up to you to figure out your Major, because an English Major will need different applications than a Math or Science Major will (and the more specialized the tech -- the Higher the cost (unfortunately)).

Good Luck hunting for your computer. If you still have questions -- go to the College Bookstore E-Store (computers), and your Advisor for your program of study. BOTH will have a good idea of basic needs, and what you will also need over the 4 years of the Undergrad Degree Program. Me, I do my own research, and I purchase with the goal in mind that the Laptop needs to last at least 4 years before I can replace it or upgrade.

I am IT support for a University, most laptops these days come with wireless inbuilt. I don't pay for it, so I don't know how much. We use dell, which is pretty reliable.

I find that on my college campus I can not get a wireless signal anywhere. It could just be me though.
