Don't get me wrong- I love learning. However, it seems to me, from my own views and other people's experience- that university is just a waste of time and money. A corporate establishment that cons you into spending tens of thousands of dollars and four or more years of your life - and for what? A diploma that is useful for achieving success in the job world. Aren't there other ways of learning and shouldn't wisdom and success be measured by other things than what a piece of paper says?

You are absolutely correct! I have spent close to $100K on my education, have three degrees and I believe what was said in GOOD WILL HUNTING...you can learn it ALL in a public library for no money at all. Unfortunately you don't have that piece of paper to give to your employer.

The only benefit of education is that employers want to see a degree on your application. If I apply for a job and have no experience and someone else applies for the same job with LOTS of experience and no degree...I get hired AND I get paid more. If you don't have a degree it is an excuse for employers to underpay you.

No. A person's mind develops more intelligently and accquires a higher level of thinking by going to a university. Sure, it costs, but there are grants and loans out there to help. Also, technical schools are on the rise where a degree is earned in two years. A person needs a structured education to learn.
I understand your point on the job market world, but you will be surprised of all the things you learn in school. If there was not a structured university system, we may all be treated as equals in getting a job, therefore, you may not have the skills for a career.

I feel you man..woman? I'm a Spanish education major. I LOVE to learn, as you do. However, I feel that my dollars...and lots of them are not worth it. I married a Mexican..so I am so bored in my Spanish classes because I hardly learn anything. As far as my education classes....the college professors never had to take them because they teach at the university level. They don't know how to teach and every "learn how to be a teacher class" is the same- they basically give you problems you will find in your classroom, but don't give you any ideas how to deal with them. I feel that if I did my own personal research at home...for a minimal fee of my interenet service, I could find out a lot of things about how each age group learns best and find good ideas for the classroom. Also...instead of wasting my time, I could be at home collecting materials, creating learning games, planning lessons, thinking about creative ways to measure what the students have learned besides giving tests. Also, the gen eds...what a waste....human diseases? earth science? they just want your $$$$$$

As someone that has been out of high school for 10 years (with a GED) and has no degree (and no current job) it makes a difference. That is why I decided to go back to school. I am not happy making $8-$9/hr.
