At age 47, I am working toward a bachelors degree in information science with a focus on programming. I also have an infant business going and work full time for someone else. My question is this: is it even worth it, at this point in my life, to persue a college degree? Who would hire a 49 year-old programmer fresh out of college? I have over 20 years in the IT industry, mainly on the hardware side. I am also actively growing a business in robotics and internet properties development.

I am finding myself with too much to do and very little time to do it in. Should I focus on the business or the education? Which one has more potential (at my age) for financial gain? I loathe working for other people, but may need a college degree to maintain my employability.

The posibilities are endless for me, but I can't go in all directions.

Any worldly bits o' wisdom out there?

What do you think you would be happier doing? Seriously, age is just a number. My mom is 45 and she is on her way to a Bachelors Degree in Nursing, and we are all really proud of her. I knew my whole life what I wanted to do, but who knows, when I'm 50 it may not be what I want anymore. Try not to pay attention to the fact that you're older than alot of college grads, because who cares? You just have to decide if that's what you really want to do. And if it is, do it! If not, just make sure you won't spend your life regreting that decision, in whatever you decide. Good luck!

I don't know if there is a single answer to your question.
There is no way for other people to predict your future.

If it helps you any, my granpa got his college degree at the age of 50. I'm proud of his degree probably more than I'm proud of my own MS that I earned at the age of 21. He was making better money after getting his degree.

You wouldn't be a 49-year old programmer fresh out of college. Your experience isn't going away from your resume.

Finish the degree. Your experience puts you way above any 21-year-old college grad kid, but the degree can be the ticket to a better job or a raise in your current job. Employers want people who are willing to learn new things and aren't afraid to go out and do it at any age. Good luck with school!

I think you should continue with your bachelor's degree, because no matter how old you are, when u get it, people out there will hire you! Because you don't like working were you are at right now, so with the Bachelor's degree you could do much better!
