So I understand that the California government will pay you to become a nurse to help you through it. I know you have to pay some of it back, but, does anyone have a website url to read up on this?

My parents cosigned a loan that will go through in the next week. They have already paid for my first semester of college, and due to personal circumstances (to put it simply, they don't like my boyfriend) they refuse to cosign for a loan for next semester. I told them from the start that I needed them to cosign loans that I would pay off, and that I didn't want them to pay for my college tuition. Now that they ignored that, they hold it against me and are trying to bring me back home on the basis that I won't leave my boyfriend for them. I have never had any emotional support from my family and I have wanted to be emancipated since I was 12. I graduated high school a year early, primarily to get away from home.

The loan refund will go onto a Higher One debit card provided by my school. I hold the card, my name is on it. Considering my age, do my parents have a right to the money or do I? If they try to pull me out of school, I plan on using the loan money to pay for next semester.

I will soon be embarking on yet another milestone, college. While I am absolutely overjoyed at being able to make the transition from high school to college, my biggest fear is that after college I will be bombarded with debt. Please, tell me of your experiences, or current dealings with such a dilema.
All answers are well appreciated.

I was on the phone with Sallie Mae this afternoon. I have a private loan through them for $45,000+-. The loan just entered the repayment period this month (after 2 6-month forbearances) and they are asking for $670.00/month. Here are my monthly finances as of today (I live in CA):

rent: $1025.00
utilities: $150.00
food: $200
transportation: $150
fed. student loan: $50
clothes/etc..: $50
misc.: $200

Total: $1825

This doesn't leave much money for private student loans. Is there a maximum (by law) that they can expect based on my income? Do I have any other options? Please help!!

I am a junior in college and I am contemplating getting married. The only thing that has stopped me thus far is the fear of losing my financial aid. I cannot afford to lose any of my financial aid. We have two children together. I do not work because of school and the children, but he works full time. This year before taxes, he should bring home about $23,000. My estimated financial contribution as of now is $0. Would it change if I got married?

I'm not going to get very much from the federal government or scholarships, and my parents aren't paying for college. Does anyone know which banks/lenders have a good reputation for offering manageable student loans? I live in Indianapolis, IN.

Went to college back in 97 for about 2 years and ended up dropping out without completing school. Never paid it back (went into default year 2 or 3) so it's been out there for over 6 years now. My question is with it being in collections, does that mean I can haggle my way out of paying the FULL ammount?

Most bad debt gets sold to collection agencies for a fraction of the cost (usually 3% - 5%, 10% at most). Of course the collection agency is going to want the full ammount (that's some nice profit), however they can work with you for a 'settlement' amount.

So did sallie mae sell my loan to someone that I can get away with only having to pay 10% - 20% to make it go away, or am I stuck with paying the full amount?

OK, here's my dilemna: I want to be a filmmaker/screenwriter, and I got accepted to two film schools but am unable to attend either one because of financial roadblocks. First, I live alone w/my mom who has jacked-up credit and is unable to get loans approved, therefore she can't co-sign on any loans for me. Secondly, I don't have any kind of credit whatsoever (I'm 18) and, I've been informed, no bank would ever trust someone under the age of 24 w/a $20,000+ loan. I've tried scholarships, and I got a few minor ones ($500-$4,000) but they don't even begin to cover the cost. Does anyone know any way else I can finance my education? This is my lifelong dream on the line here...

I'm 21...I'd like to go to Northwestern State University in Louisiana to major in Business Administration..i'd take the 2 year course to get the Associate's Degree. I went to a technical school already for audio engineering and my mom paid for that. Since i want to go back to school...I must pay for it myself. How can I get enough money to pay for school...and pay for housing off-campus which I think is a seperate cost that the loan may not cover? A friend of mine who goes there said the housing cost is totally seperate. I need money for schooling, housing, food etc. What can I do?

I get financial aid and my family contribution was determined to be Zero. When i register for classes it says that "depending on how many more credit hours you enroll for, your financial aid will go up" But how much more will it go up? Any general idea? Last semester after paying tuition and books for all of my classes- i had about 400 that i got back. I was only taking 12 credit hours though. I would love to take 16 or 18 credit hours- but if my financial aid amount isnt going to go up enough- since im a mother with 2 young girls... i need the extra 'left over' financial aid i get- instead of spending it on more books to take more classes. Anyone know how they figure how much it goes up? I'm going to a community college and i get 2155 for 12 credit hours. How much more would it go up if i added more credit hours to my winter schedule?

My husband is applying to medical school this year. I am a stay-at-home Mom to a two year old, and one on the way. Medical school doesn't allow students to work, so we will be living off loans. However, I've seen some estimates of maximum loan amounts, and with tuition nearing $40,000, there isn't even close to enough to even afford rent, let alone anything else. Most of the schools are in big cities, which makes the cost of living even higher. If you've been in this situation, or know someone else who has, what did you do? Would we qualify for section 8 or housing vouchers just until he gets into residency? What is the maximum amount of loans someone can get per year for medical school (subsidized + unsubsidized)? Any info would be appreciated.
