Financial Aid

[Selected]: All categories Education & Reference Financial Aid

I am going to start medical school next year. I am 23 years old, and a college graduate. I am hoping to claim, for financial aid purposes, that I am an "independent" student, because from what I have heard my award will be better.
Will my ability to do this be affected by my status in filing federal tax forms? I am currently employed full-time, so it would be possible either for me to claim myself for an exemption, or my father to claim me as a dependent. I am hoping to find out which is better, strategically, for applying for financial aid this year.

The FAFSA is open for submittal starting January 1 and the Oregon deadline is February 1. How do I get this done soon when my parents W2s have not arrived?

How does anyone get this done on the first few days of January?

My younger sister is 17 and had worked for the last 3 months of 2006. She will be starting college in the fall and needs to start applying for financial aid for the 2007-2008 school year. She lives at home and our parents pay for more than 50% of her living expenses, so I know she would still be considered a dependent. However, when she applys for her federal grants for college she does not want to be associated with our parents federal taxes as they are behind in filing and it may cause her not to be able to get her grants. Is there a way that she can file her own taxes so she does not have to list our parents information on her grant applications?

So I am going back to school and my b/f and I are trying to plan our engagement/wedding.

Is it better for me to be single rather than married when I go back to school & apply for financial aid? Will his income count against me when they put together financial packages?

Any knowledge of this is appreciated, thanks!

I'm 31, married, caucasion, work full-time making about 32k/ year. I want to go back to school to get an Assoc. degree in the healthcare field. I can only do this if I would be able to get a student loan, or some sort of financial aid. Do you think I would qualify for that, or some sort of grant?

Im still in highschool junior year and i want to apply for a job so i can get some money to spend. but my mom is arguing that if i work, i have to pay taxes n fafsa can see that i work and give less money to me. Is this true? if it is, can i work until end of the year (2007, which Im still a senior) and quit my job and still get the same amount from FAFSA as if i wasnt working. Or do you guys have a better plan for me? Thanks

I'm usually a straight A and B student, but I did pretty bad in school last semester and it says I'm on "probation" for financial aid this semester. What exactly does that mean?
