It was passed into law in June 2001 under the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Act. 2002 was the first year that higher education expenses could be used as a tax deduction. It includes college and vocational classes past the high school or secondary school level. The amount is $2000 of $4000 based on adjusted gross income.
