The FAFSA is open for submittal starting January 1 and the Oregon deadline is February 1. How do I get this done soon when my parents W2s have not arrived?

How does anyone get this done on the first few days of January?

On the FAFSA they ask if you have filed your return or not. In this case, the info would be for your parents. If the answer is no, then you are asked to give estimates for the questions asked about their finances. After they file their taxes, then you go back to the FAFSA on-line and put in the finalized numbers.

What I did when I was applying to college was that I used my parent's tax return from the year before. Provided that both of your parents are still working in the same place and haven't gotten a major raise, this should be a good estimate and you can always update it (well, you HAVE to update) with the current info once your parents file their returns this year. As long as you have the estimate in before the deadline though, you should be fine. It may be a little weird to follow because the line numbers on the FAFSA will be referring to this year's tax forms, but as long as you pay attention to what each line is asking for, it's really no problem. Good luck! :)

When you file your FAFSA, your parents can show their estimated income and check the box that their taxes are not completed. In that way, you can file on time. Once your parents have their taxes completed, you or they will need to go back into the FAFSA site and change the income info accordingly.
