My younger sister is 17 and had worked for the last 3 months of 2006. She will be starting college in the fall and needs to start applying for financial aid for the 2007-2008 school year. She lives at home and our parents pay for more than 50% of her living expenses, so I know she would still be considered a dependent. However, when she applys for her federal grants for college she does not want to be associated with our parents federal taxes as they are behind in filing and it may cause her not to be able to get her grants. Is there a way that she can file her own taxes so she does not have to list our parents information on her grant applications?

my daughter had to provide copies of my tax returns when she applied for college grants. she can file her own taxes, but they do ask if she is being claimed as a dependent on anyone's taxes. did she even earn enough that she has to file taxes?

It's probably possible, but only if she becomes legally emancipated from them. In any case, she can file her own tax return, unless your parents already filed one for her. I'm no talking about claiming her as a dependent. If she makes over a certain amount a year (I don't know what it is these days) she is required to file a tax return.

If she worked and earned over a certain amount she must file.
She can claim independence but if she is receiving over 50% of her support, she ha to claim it.
She does need to report how much your parents made last year.
The fact that your parents are behind in payments should not have an effect on receiving a grant.

Did your sister earn more than $8,450 this past year? If not, she is not required to file income tax. Keep in mind that if your parents claim her as their dependent, she cannot claim an exemption for herself on her own tax form.

You will need to consult a student aid consultant for exact information. I would say call your local community college. They usually have a financial aid office that can help.
