2)A comet has an elliptical orbit with the sun at one focus. The eccentricity of the orbit is approximately 0.92. The length of the major axis of the orbit is about 41.25 units. Find the standard form of the equation of the orbit.
3)The focus of a hyperbolic mirror has coordinates (26,). Find the vertex of the mirror if (26,24) is one of the points on the mirror and the other focus has the coordinates (-26,0).
4)You and a friend live 4 miles apart and are talking on the phone. You hear a crack of thunder and 13 seconds later your friend hears the crack. Find an equation that gives the possible places where the lightning could have occurred.(hyperbola). (Use miles as the unit of distance. The speed of sound is about 1100 ft/sec.)

I have bad GCSE, but great A-Levels do I have a chance for Oxbridge? my GCSE at school were crap and I wasn't really trying, I got mostly C's and D's but I worked hard at college and got 3 distinctions in my BTEC nationals (equivalent to 3 A's in A-levels) and an 'A' in my maths A-level. I know that my GCSE does not reflect my true ability but do I still have a chance for Oxford university and Cambridge university?

As a Brit, I just instinctively unserstand that places like Southwark and Chiswick are pronounced Suthuck and Chizzick. But my American friends think we're utterly nuts for not pronouncing them South Wark and Chizz Wick. Anyone know when it became English practice to use the silent w and why, this being so, it hasn't dropped out of the spelling too?
