The adj. "slick" was first used around 1300 AD meaning "smooth, glossy, sleek" (of skin or hair).

Around 1599 (but popularized in the late 1950's), "slick" came to mean "clever in deception", so someone who is good at tricking others is "slicker than your average" person.
