Even though my first language is English, I still have trouble trying to understand comma splices and when not to use commas. My college professor routinely critisiced my using commas like in the following example, but I'm not sure why. Would someone explain which one of these two sentences is gramatically correct?

Or should this be written without the comma as:

I'm a junior in high school now and atteding both college and high school. I took the GED practice test to see if I could pass it easly. I exceeded with the test and people say that I should go on with the GED test to be finished with high school and just move on with college. I'm a little afraid that a University might not accept a GED. I know that people can attend college even without a high school diploma. I would rather go on with my career and recieve my Phd faster rather than worry about one more year in high school. So with getting my GED does it make me look less smart? Can I recieve scholarships and grants with a GED?
