I want to get some kind of a DVR, but i don't know what to look for, I also don't know if i will need a subscription to use it. I just want something i can hook up to my TV and record stuff, all i have is an old VCR, which i hate. Please let me know how DVR's work, and if i have to have a subscription to use one, or which ones are good.

I have a 4 room setup, with a normal 2 LNB and a 6x8 Switch. This was done by professional install. The only one that works correctly is in the bedroom, the rest cut out and say searching for service. Anyone have any help?

We have Directv already. I don't have any kind of DVR, but I would really like one. Can I buy a TIVO box on eBay or some vendor like weaknees.com, and just plug it in? Do I have to replace the Directv receiver or can the DVR somehow control the Directv? Do I use the same access card I have now, or do I have to get new ones?

Sorry for all the questions, I don't know anything about DVRs or satellite hacks, but I am fairly technically-savvy. Thanks.

I have been putting my video collection on to DVD. They play back ok on the machine I recorded them on, but only some of them play on a different machine. One of the error messages is 'No valid disk'
One other problem is they sometimes stop in the middle of playback with freeze frame

Why don't they make the rest of the DVD out of that same stuff?

Heres the problem. My cable goes to my cable box, then to my DVDR, and then to the TV. I go to my AV2 on TV to set DVDR to record channel, and then go back to normal TV setting. However, when I am changing channels on cable box, the DVDR is recording the same. It will not stay set on that one channel. I want it to perform like a VCR (ya know the whole TV/VCR) thing. But cant figure anything out and Philips who made the DVDR said that is what it is made for. WHAT? Who wants to record something they are going to watch anyway? There has got to be something I am missing here...help?
