no you cannot record something and watch something else, unless you have a dual receiver.since you only have a single unit you have to watch the program recording.

I'm not familiar with the Dish DVR but I do have a DirecTV DVR which should be similar. The DVR requires 2 cables from the satellite. Does yours have 2 cables? Each cable brings in a seperate feed from the satellite. That way you can record something on one feed then switch to the other feed to watch something else. So either your roomate doesn't know how to switch to the other feed or you DVR only has 1 feed.

That's normal. Your main TV is "TV 1" and your bedroom, or other TV is "TV 2". Most of your recordings go on "TV 2". I love my DVR but it did take a little while to get used to. Also you can record 2 shows at once. But as you can probably guess, one will record on TV2 and one will record on TV1. So you have to either be (1) not watching TV (2) willing to watch one of the shows you ARE recording or (3) You CAN watch something off your playlist while recording 2 shows. For EX. TV1 and TV2 will both be recording...BUT you can pick something you have already recorded, and watch that. cool.
