We have Directv already. I don't have any kind of DVR, but I would really like one. Can I buy a TIVO box on eBay or some vendor like weaknees.com, and just plug it in? Do I have to replace the Directv receiver or can the DVR somehow control the Directv? Do I use the same access card I have now, or do I have to get new ones?

Sorry for all the questions, I don't know anything about DVRs or satellite hacks, but I am fairly technically-savvy. Thanks.

You can either call Customer Service or order the service via DirecTV.com to get a DVR receiver. It would be a $5.99/month charge for the DVR service but it's free if you have the Premier package. Depending on your standing with the company, you may be eligible for a free receiver or a receiver for $50 after rebate, but I think this is subject to a 2-year programming commitment on your part.

Unfortunately it's not just as simple as swapping the boxes - since their technology enables 2 channels to be recorded simultaneously, the field tech will have to install a 2nd incoming coaxial cable to the receiver, which obviously accepts 2 physical incoming signals. It comes with its own access card for the new receiver.

Once you use it, you won't believe how simple it is. It can record up to 100 hours of programming, allows you to set up a Season Pass for your favorite programs - all the raves you read about and more. Unless you plan on saving recordings for future use, you won't need a VCR ever again!

DirecTV has its own DVR; it and the TiVo DirecTV units are the only ones that will work with DIrecTV. Call DirecTV and ask about what DVRs they have to offer. They have both standard and HD DVRs available. You can use the new DVR to replace the receiver you now have, or add it as an additional receiver. In any case, you will have to get a new card from DirecTV, as the card is tied to the receiver and cannot be swapped.

Replace your old reciever with a R10 reciever that includes Tivo. This is a DirecTV reciever that has Tivo so you don't have to pay the extra monthly to Tivo. It is NOT a Tivo reciever. Don't buy it from DirecTV because they don't sell it anymore. They ended their partnership with Tivo. I got mine from weaknees.com
WARNING: In order to use the full functionality of a DVR you need 2 connections from your satellite. That means you need 2 cables running from your cable box to your satellite. This is so you can record 2 shows at a time or record 1 show and watch another show at the same time. This is because each cable brings in a different satellite feed. With only 1 feed you could only record 1 show and NOT be able to change the channel. You have to stay on the channel you are recording.
Hope that helps.

tivo is a service you pay apporx. 15 dollars a month for. If you call directv they will give you a dvr to replace the one you have and you will have to pay a fee.
