I just want something i can hook up to my TV and record stuff, all i have is an old VCR, which i hate. Please let me know how DVR's work, and if i have to have a subscription to use one, or which ones are good.

You got 3 choices:

1) Tivo costs $12.95/month, you buy the device up front.
2) Cable DVR costs $5-$10/month, you are leasing it, so no initial costs.
3) Media Centers costs $500-$2000, but no monthly fee.

If you have standard cable, then I would recommend Tivo. Great easy to use interface.

If you have digital or HDTV, then go with the cable DVR. You will get better video and audio quality out of the DVR.

Media centers are only good, if you plan on using your TV as a computer monitor, such as for gaming, web surfing, watching download movies.

Basically, all of these are computers with hard drives. All the shows are recorded on the hard drive. Most of these devices allows you to watch TV and record another show. Or record two shows at one time. The amount of shows will be based on how large the hard drive is.

For example, an 80 GB hard drive will store about 80 hours of standard definition TV programming.

companies DVRs are subscription, there is not any way out of that.. With cable or IPTV you could not purchase one, you will possibly desire to hire them. With satellite tv for pc, you're in a position to purchase one. A Standalone TiVo DVR demands subscription. you could in all probability get provider much less DVRs, yet will fee extra and/or not artwork besides as a centers DVR.

If your digital cable company offers a DVR, you can pay a monthly fee to have it. That fee is added on to your programming, and you get a special cable terminal with the recorder.

TiVO is a private company that you must have a subscription to.
