I’m not against going with a Home Theater in a Box (HTIB), but I thought someone might have a recommendation for a good, flexible receiver and some speakers. I’m not an audiophile but don’t want to buy a low-end system I won’t be happy with. I have Direct-TV (HD), a 42” plasma TV, and my room is already wired for 5.1 surround. I plan on using the system for music, watching DVDs, and sports on the TV. Based on the above any thoughts on a receiver/speaker combo that won’t break my bank but will give me some nice options? I’m thinking $500-$600 for the receiver, not much more for the speakers.

Or since my budget is kinda low should I just do a HTIB for now? If so any thoughts on which one?

Thanks!

I am planning on the actual speakers I am going to purchase are going to be the Bose Acoustimass 16 Series 2. I will still need a receiver, and dvd player. Can some one suggest a good quality receiver with some good features that will cost no more than 500 dollars US. And if anybody suggests other speaker systems, I would like to hear about that as well. Thanks for the help.

I had my dvd player, which is a surround sound unit, plugged into a power strip, along with the tv, cell phone charger, and a lamp. My roomate plugged in my laptop to charge it, and we heard a very loud noise and both the tv and the dvd player stopped working. I really dont care about the tv b/c i had just bought it two hours before this happened and it is under warranty, but the dvd player is very nice and is a little older. I took it apart and noticed that it has a fuse, but it looked ok. Any advice?

To give you an example, the Bag End Infrasub-18 can go down to 8 Hz at -3dB.

Also, at the 2000 CES there were a couple of subs that stood out:

Tyler Acoustics' Titantic 23" powered subwoofer

(You can see a glimpse of it on the far right of the picture...)

Wilson Audio's XS dual-18" tower subwoofer system.

Simply phenomenal!

What systems do you know of or felt (since it would be below the ear's audibility)?

My TV supports HDCP (it's copyprotected) so I was wondering if I could still use a HDMI cable through the DVI port.

I heard they were high difinition, is this true? I tried the component cable's through my DVD player and I didn't see any difference in picture quality, so other then that, what is the normal resolution for component?

-Thanks-

Although it pales in comparison to Once were Warriors, I still fins the sequel "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" highly entertaining. However, I am unable to find a DVD copy that plays in US players, all of them are region 2 and 4. Also I don't have a VCR nor do I wish to purchase one so the VHS version is out as well. Where can I find a copy of this DVD? If that's not possible, where can I get it transferred from one format to the other without paying a lot of $$$?
Thanks

This slide projector is a TDC Vivid Headliner 300, Model 325. I am not sure of what year it was made in, or what it is worth. It is in excellent condition, still works (as I tested it tonight with some old family slides). I no longer need it in the house, and I want to sell it at my next yard sale, but I want to make sure I am asking the right price for it's worth. The only thing that might be wrong with it, is that sometimes the slides get jammed, and it gets very warm, so it needs to be used in a well-ventilated room to prevent burns.

I have a DCM 15 inch 250watt RMS subwoofer in my dorm room. The problem is that the floors are concrete (with epoxy clear coat) and so they are really smooth and hard. The subwoofer has so much power that it literally dances around the room. (despite the fact that it weighs a ton) I cut out a chunk of carpet and taped it down to the floor to place the sub on, however i believe i'm losing a lot of the bass and it's not really secured very well. I thought about maybe attaching rubber to the feet of the sub, but not sure if even that would help. Any ideas?

Playing DVDs of movies recorded in 16:9 aspect I find that some will only play in that aspect on a 4:3 aspect screen with black bars top and bottom. Switching to a 16:9 ("wide") screen, merely stretches the image horizontally resulting in a badly distorted image. The full height of the 16:9 screen is not used. Why and how can I tell which DVDs behave this way and which will actually play on the full 16:9 screen?

I have made back-up copies of my lessons on the DVD-R and a few of the students reported that they received format errors while trying to play it back both on thier DVD players and/or PC. I switched to the DVD+R discs and it seemed to only be worse as more students reported format errors with the +R than the -R. Is it possible I do not have the proper set up copying and writing to the DVD?
