I had my dvd player, which is a surround sound unit, plugged into a power strip, along with the tv, cell phone charger, and a lamp. My roomate plugged in my laptop to charge it, and we heard a very loud noise and both the tv and the dvd player stopped working. I really dont care about the tv b/c i had just bought it two hours before this happened and it is under warranty, but the dvd player is very nice and is a little older. I took it apart and noticed that it has a fuse, but it looked ok. Any advice?

the chances are you have tripped the rcd (residual current device) in your fusebox-this can happen if a circuit is overloaded-each circuit in a home has its own rcd (lighting-ring main-shower etc)-go to your fusebox and see if any of the switches are down-before you adjust anything unplug the power strip from the wall-then turn on the rcd-if this is the case it will be the only one in the "down" position-then check the power strips fuse-if all is ok replace the power strip but don't plug so much into it in future. nb in older homes you may have to replace a fuse-if you are not sure do not attempt this yourself when in doubt you should ALWAYS consult a qualified electrician-electricity is dangerous and should not be messed with.

Have you reset your power strip? It may either have a circuit-breaker (where you would turn the power switch off then on to reset), or a few built-in that you would check to see if it is blown or not.

If you've done that, and considering that the fuse in your DVD is okay, your DVD might be fried, so unfortunately, it might be in your best interest to have it replaced -unless it was an expensive player (I know you said it was of very nice quality), then I would recommend having a certified technician take a look at it to give you an estimate. You will probably be charged a fee, so you will have to determine if the time and expense to find out is worth it.

Have you tried plugging it into another electrical outlet that you know is working? If so and the fuse is good, then you probably have a bad power supply. You can test the power supply in it if you know a little about electronics by checking the primary voltage at the supply and then checking the secondary voltage. If you do not know anything about this then i would advise replacing the unit because it would probably cost more to take it to a service center than what it is worth.

good luck
