The initial success of the PS3 will determine the overall winner. The fact is, Sony has over promised and under delivered on EVERY detail of Blu-Ray so far, and the first generation of Blu-Ray discs has been reported to be SIGNIFICANTLY inferior in quality to the first generation of HD-DVD's regardless of their respective storage capacities. So much so, that many reviewers are saying to avoid buying more than half of the first release Blu-Ray discs, or purchase the STANDARD DVD version and get an up-scaling DVD player because the quality has been that far below expectation.
The other thing that people need to understand is that the PS3 (and yes, xbox360 as well) will NOT have games made in their respective next gen video formats. This means games for both systems will still only be made on standard DVD's and the only purpose of having the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray component will be to watch movies.
The previous statement about marketing clout is very true, and I think in the long run, PURELY because of Sony's pull on the entire electronics and movie industries, regardless of the quality of the product they create, Blu-Ray will "win" the format war, but it will be a bit too late. By the time this battle finally ends, most of our HD content will be capable of being delivered over IP on demand and this futile format war will all have been for naught.
However, I personally will only purchase HD-DVD's and related products into the foreseeable future because of their significant jump start in time on the market, as well as better quality first generation products.
Just my educated opinion

This is one format war in which there will be no clear winner. Right now HD-DVD has a big edge over BluRay; it has better picture quality and the players cost less (half as much as BR). However, unlike the Beta-VHS contest, it is possible to make a player that will play both kinds of discs, so both can exist simultaneously, and the consumer doesn't need to know which is which. It is my opinion that neither of these formats will be successful until such a dual-function player is available at a reasonable price. There are companies working on it.

Geesh, like anybody knows the answer to that. What I can tell you is that HD DVD has been well received in the HT market. The Blu-Ray players have been plagued with video quality issues. Either way, I'm not buying until they figure this thing out.

Who ever has the better marketing campaign behind it. Not necessarily the better format. Remember VHS vs Betamax? Betamax had better picture quality, but VHS companies like RCA/Phillips, JVC, etc had a better grip of the U.S. market at that time. So, VHS won.
