First of all if anyone says Bose run like hell. They are way way WAY over priced, have huge "holes" in their frequency response, and have very poor durability.

5K is a great budget. Little rule of thumb for Audio spending. Speakers should represent half or more of your budget. (this doesn't include the TV for home theater)

JBL's in this price range are very nice, you won't be disappointed.

Polk has a nice system about $3000 retail
front speakers: RTi12
center speaker: CSi5
surround speakers: RTi6
subwoofer: PSW505

If you want to crack the "High End" market Paradigm are very nice speakers www.paradigm.com

There is also B&W, Kliptch, NHT,Boston acoustic

Vandersteen:
1C Tower Speaker, $785/pair
VCC-5 Reference Center Speaker, $1,995
VSM-1 Surround Speaker, $949/pair
2Wq Subwoofer, $1,295

Monitor Audio:
RS 6 Tower Speaker, $999/pair
RS LCR Center-Channel Speaker, $599
RS FX Surround Speaker, $699/pair
RS W12 Subwoofer, $999

Man there are lots of great ones out there in this range, listen to all you can, then go with what you like.

JBL is average in sound quality (not like they used to be or even their pro sound gear) for the price. If you care about sound quality, avoid Bose. That's all I have to say on those two brands.

There are many good-to-excellent choices under $1,000, but most will not be found at any of these big consumer electronics stores.

I would recommend visiting a local high-end audio boutique shop. There you will find quality that is more focused on sound quality over mass production.

Look for speaker brands like Definitive Technology, Athena, Paradigm, JMlab, even BIC Acoustech and others.

My favorite choice given your criteria would be the following...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Silverline Audio Prelude petite high performance floorstanders (for the front L&R mains, and L&R surrounds)
Silverline Audio Center Stage (front and rear center channels)
Hsu Research VTF-2 Mk 2 (powered subwoofer)

If you are a critical listener and love music as well as a great movie soundtrack, I know of no speaker system that is as competant for music and movies for around $5,000. This is high-end performance. This system is good enough to use as a 5.1 system (instead of a 6.1 system) and will still outperform a similarly priced 6.1 system unless you have a very large room (i.e. a room that is larger than 400 square feet with the width over 20 feet in length), then the Silverline/Hsu Research 6.1 system will be in your best interest.

If I can help any further, e-mail anytime.

For $5 I was able to get a full 5 speaker set of Dynaudio Contour bookshelf speakers (new) plus an M&K subwoofer.

Look at Dynaudio. The Focus series is well-regarded and affordable. Contour is a step up in price and performance. You don't need bulky floorstanders if you plan to use a sub anyway, so you can get better bookshelf speakers for the mains/surrounds.

JBLs are great. Bose and Harmon Kardon really good too. But I think the JBL E series is better value for money. I think Vinverth and Altec Lansing solutions are worth checking out too.
Before you buy read varied reviews and make an educated decision.
