Well yeah the computer is acting somewhat weird, (Not that it is abnormal anyway XD) you see Windows Explorer seems to 'Doze off' and then becomes non responsive. Becasue of this everything else seems to work fine but WE. I kepted getting into the Task Manager and then 'End Process' the explorer.exe. Weird thing was I think it was mshta.exe, yeah I was closing some programs off and I chose that one to close out and then the dumb computer starts to come around and be responsive. The same thing happened with my Xfire. I think I have around 320 RAM and the processor runs at 797Mhz, is there something wrong? Besides I am upgrading everything in a littel while though, just I don't want the same problem to happen with the new stuff ( I am putting in a new motherbord, processor, power supply ect [Dual core 64bit AMD processor, 1GBmemory and so on]). also, if anyone knows, How does over clocking work and how can I do it my self?

Ive heard it several ways about preserving battery life, some say drain it completely, recharge full, and repeat, some say never keep it too low or too high when it reaches 40% charge it to about 90 and stop. So my question is, i have a lithium-ion battery for my laptop, what is the CORRECT thing to do with it to preserve its life? Real answers please no guesses i can make things up on my own too.

I would like to do some computer work, but know that it's a good idea to ground yourself first to avoid messing up RAM and that kinda thing- but I don't want to have to buy a special wrist band or anything!! Any suggestions?

I had my computer either 2001, 2002,2003,or 2004. First, I used it for internet, desktop needs. But now I have alot of freetime, so I use it for gaming. But since my video card is very bad, I can handle very little games, so my enjoyment is limited. I currtenly play Call of Duty for PC all on low, Counter-Strike: Source on the low detailed maps, (All on Medium).

So, I need a new graphics card. But since my Computer is pretty darn old, won't that mean I need to get a 6000 series Geforce? Because, I'm not sure if my Computer can able to handle a 8800 GTS Geforce. Its too... Modern..

While my old computer.. Isn't too modern... So will that mean I'll just use a more lower-end graphics card, like a NVIDIA 5000 or whatever?

I regularly use rubbing alcohol to clean smears and fingerprints off the shiny side of most of my CDs. Can rubbing alcohol (used on either side) damage a CD?

I'm supposed to be getting either 2 or 4 gigs of ddr2-1066 rams , the point is , when regarding the 4gb , it doesn't read completely on 32-bit xp and vista systems , mosly reads 3.12-3.3. I can get a hold of both 64-bit OSs but what's on my mind is that if they have to use the WOW32 to emulate pretty much all the games available doesn't that mean 32-bit rules are applied and not only will that make 3.12 gigs of ram available but will confuse the daul channel of the second set of rams 2x1 and maybe messup the whole clock ?

if there's anyway around it in either 32 or 64-bit , thats great ,

if my whole theory about games using 32bit os rules to emulate please tell me . thanks

I have 3 questions on core duo 2:

1. Can I change my pentium 4 to core duo 2 ?

2. Do I have to get another PC to get the core duo 2 or can I just replace the processor?

3. How much will the processor cost to change?

1) I use my computer every day. It is better when I'm done for the day to have it sleep, hibernate, or shut down, and why?

2) Is it better to use it until the battery needs charging, then do so, or just keep it plugged in?

Thanks! I just want to maximize my laptop life and would like to know what will help ensure this.

Out of no where windows vista wants to install my video card which I have been using with windows vista for a few months. I checked the "don't show this message again button" and didn't install the video card becuase logically one can conclude that there is no reason to install something that is already in the computer and working fine. Now, my graphics are different and I regret hitting the "don't show this message again button". How do I install the video card?

I already went to the Install hardware thing and I couldn't find my graphics card which is a Nvidia Geforce 6500.

I have had a new processor put in lately and ever since then my nVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 Graphics card isn't starting!
When ever i went to play a new game e.g Cricket 2007 and Roller coaster Tycoon 3 Platinum edition it didn't start and the mouse pointer just goes to the to the top left hand corner and nothing happens!
I Went into Device Manager and it had a yellow exclamation mark next to the name of my driver, so i looked in properties and it said it couldn't start.

Some other person said that it might be the graphics card in the processor conflicting with it and i would need to go into my BIOS setup! If so, how would i do this?

My brother has been messing around with computers lately, mainly on the internet, and my dad and i arent comfortable with him using our respective PCs. i have an old computer (im writing the specs from memory):

Pentium III 800 Mhz intel processor
256 MB RAM(actually less, about 204)
50 Gb HDD
56k modem

cant remember anything else.
Do you think this old heap of junk can be cleaned up and given to him until its beyond repair? its 8 years old.

another thing is that it has win98 installed. i want to reformat it but dad lost the installation disk years back, when i was a kid. win98 doesnt have support anymore, so now what... is there another (hopefully free) OS that can be installed on thes specs? or should i just leave the OS as is?

thanks for your help.

The screen on my laptop went black and would not work. The only way I could get it to work was by plugging it in to an external screen. I took it in to have an estimate done. The place says they will diagnose the problem for free, and fix it, if what they do doesnt fix it, then you dont have to pay.
They called us and said the problem was a piece on the motherboard that needed to be replaced. They call us the next day said when they did that it enabled the screen to come on, but only for a minute before it would shut off again. Said it looks like liquid got into the motherboard and fried a switch there that turns the screen on and the only way to fix that is to buy a new motherboard. They said its not worth the money and want us to trade it in for one of their laptops. They said motherboard would cost $500 and then there would be $90 installation fee.
My laptop is not even 3 years old, its a HP Pavilion.
Is this a scam? Do they just want my laptop?

I am 16 and I am looking for a laptop, price is not an issue. I will probably use it mostly for surfing the web, school work, and listening to iTunes of course! Also I would want to download the Sims 2, so I need a laptop that the Sims wouldn't make it slow down or anything. And I will probably download microsoft office [word, excel, powerpoint] and photoshop. So does anyone have suggestions?
