This is my first year spent in the icy north and I've read all about how to drive on icy roads. But our cabin is down a hill (unpaved) and driving up it with snow on it, I find my tires spinning. So far I've managed it by going slow in low gear but would really appreciate any hints. We have 2 vehicles...a Tracker with 4 wheel drive (that you have to turn the hubs outside) and a Chevy Silverado pickup with 4 wheel drive. I've never driven 4 wheel drive before either. Hubby is disabled, so I've got to learn this on my own.

Thanks! Really appreciate any opinions.

I know everyone complains about people driving and cell phones, which I consider dangerous. But what about those women who put on make up. I was almost ran over by a woman putting MASCARA on. I was actually rear ended at a stop light because the lady was looking at a magazine at the same time. I have seen people looking at computers and doing paper work. Maybe the police should be able to pull over people doing things that could be potentiallly dangerous and give warnings. What do you Think?

Is it legal for vehicle reverse lights to illuminate when not backing or at least in reverse?

I've been noticing late model vehicles that activate the reverse lights when the driver unlocks with the remote. The parking lights and reverse lights light up and stay that way for some time.

This seems contrary to the function of reverse lights--clearly communicating the act of backing--and I would think it's contrary to vehicle codes.

i was in an accident and my car hit the median, flipped twice in midair, landed on its wheels and me and the passenger were fine besides a scratch on his knee, we were wearing seatbelts. Is this predictable becuase we wore seat belts or are we just lucky..? the car was totaled, it was cuz we sliped on ice- swerved, which caused us to hit the median, flip over a couple times in midair...is it expected that me n the passesnger wouldnt realy be hurt? or is it shocking...

My front tires are good, but my back tires are kind of worn. Winter is here in Salt Lake City and the roads are slippery. I drive an '03 Celica GT-S.

I'm rather poor so I'd need to get the tires on credit. If I get winter I'd have to change in the summer, which means spending more money and finding storage in my apartment.

I don't really want all-season because my front tires have good treads.

Sipe sounds good but I don't know how much of a benefit it will help with ice/slush.

I haven't had my license thaaat long and I'm still trying to figure stuff out.

I was doing 65 today on a highway and the rain was pouring, I could barely see. There was already a lot of rain on the road and lots of puddles.

I started to notice that my car felt like it was gliding and the it kept going left and right, I steered a little bit but I didn't want to jerk the wheel. Luckily I was all alone on the road so I could move into different lanes without any harm.

So the car was going left and right at it's own discretion and I felt like I was gliding, so I stopped accelerating and didn't brake. After a while everything felt normal again.

Was I hydroplaning? I know what it is but I've never felt it before. I can't tell whether I was or not.

Thanks.

In California it's illeagal (Misdemeanor) for a dealer to sell a car that doesn't comply with Division 12 of the California Vehicle Code. Who inspects it to say that doesn't comply? It's not the DMV. Is it CHP? Who has the authority and where does it come from (ie Codes/Statutes, etc.)

I will do my best to make sure I pick a best answer.

I'm personally sick of seeing people driving without all their focus and attention behind the wheel. I have seen way too many people have accidents and be the cause of the accident because they were talking on a cell. or texting.

What do you think?

I was driving his car because he was drunk. I was trying to make a right turn onto a street which he though would lead us the wrong way. He suddenly jerked the stearing wheel away from me very hard. I lost control of the car and ran up on a curb and hit a fence. There seems to be signifigant damage. This is not the first time he's done this. I have managed to avoid accidents in the past he would have caused. He did this to his cousin a month ago. He caused his cousin to crash into a curb and blow out his(my friends) tire. He was distracting his cousin as while he was driving as well..

His employer dont do anything! Last month he complained about the brakes and they took it off the road for a day and they told him it had new brake discs and pads. Last week he spun the van 360 and dented it. Was lucky he didnt crash.
But recently hes noticed smoke and 2day something wasnt rite so he called his depot who called out aa and they said to him theres no way the brakes have been done and he was surprised he could stop as the pads had worn down, it was just metal, he had no brakes on his right side.
And 5 vans at the depot have flat batteries and have to be jump started every morning. Head office wont authorise new batteries.
There also was something hanging off underneith his van the aa said, that if it had come off on the motorway would have killed someone.
Something needs to be done about this company. Im worried about my friend and how dare the company be putting these vans on the road. Who can he contact to get this company looked at?

I hit the other vehicle and spinned them around. I did not cause the accident. The front of my car was damaged. The impact was bad enough to cause injuries.

Huh, I always thought it was the law to use a turn signal when you turn on or off a roadway or change lanes.

Even if you have your phone glued to your ear.
Even if you're in a turn lane.
Even if you're busy talking to the passenger.
Even if there isn't anyone else on the road.

I guess they don't put them in cars anymore, because I rarely see them used.

My boyfriend and I are driving from Texas to Ohio to move back home in 3 days and it is a 22 hour drive. We are driving seperate because we have two different cars. So I will be driving alone yet following him. None the less it is a long long long drive. I hate driving long distances, I've never driven longer than 4 hours by myself, any tips on how to keep me occupied? I am burning cds, and audiobooks, and other ideas? Also what kind of drinks and food do you recommend to keep me energized. And how about anything to put on the seat to keep me comfortable cause I'll be sitting a long time.
