Depending on the weather and the type of traffic, I may turn the engine off and wait, or I may just sit with the engine running. If traffic is totally stopped (for example the road is closed due to an accident), I usually will turn of the engine and just relax! In stop and go slow traffic, I will just have to sit there and pay attention to the road!

One thing to watch out for is the engine temperature! When a car is sitting in traffic, the airflow on the radiator is less, and the car can overheat. Watch your temperature gauge, and if it starts to get too high, turn on the heat in the car on high (you may want to open all the windows in warmer weather, to help take heat away from the motor!

Other than that, if you can get off the road you many be able to find a better route. Call wherever you are going, if you are expected somewhere, and let them know you will be late!

On my Harley there is no such thing as a traffic jam. I would laugh as I drive past all these fools in cars and trucks. In my Toyota I would probably find a way off the highway (I live in AZ and out here the highways are not really closed on the sides they just have semi-steep hills so not difficult to go up in a 4X4). In my Nissan I would just have to wait. Its not a 4X4 and its really new don't want to scratch the paint.

Take the first exit you can and find an alternative route to your destination. Just be sure not to take the same route everyone else is because it will just cause another traffic jam
