I'm regularly traveling from (let's say..) stop A, to stop N, it says so in the pass. However, I make a connection between trains, can I stay on the first train for the next stop (not take next train that takes me to the destination on the pass), and come back from that same stop, let's say stop H

I listen to the trains on my scanner, when they say this "The east Switch at German (a road near my house) is lined for siding" or "the west switch...)
the track goes east west, so from me hearing that, what can I kno by what way the trains are coming and going to?

Next Xmas I will have a 14 month old toddler and need to travel to DC from FL. I figured I would take Amtrak since the trains from my experience are about half full. However, I looked for trains next week for pricing purposes and some of them are sold out. Are trains on the eastern line usually sold out during the holidays if I'm not going north of DC? I know that there are many people who have bias against Amtrak, but I would prefer straight answers from people with experience.

My parents' local tube was the (disused) Aldwych (platform 5 from Holborn), but have you ever been to a disused underground station? Not just in London, but anywhere (e.g. City Hall in New York).

If you have, what was it like? This is something I would love to do myself but that anti-terrorism nervousness will almost certainly prevent in my life, so I'm trying to live vicariously through yours... :-)

My daily commute is getting worse every day. The new timetable is a joke, they can't run it on time and when the trains do turn up they are too small and hence overcrowded.
Added to this, one of the ticket machines at my home station has been faulty for 6 weeks -- I've told Farce Grate Worsten about it FOUR times now, and each time all that happens is that I get the same grovelly apologetic email telling me how they aim to fix faults within 24 hours. It's got to the stage where I've written to the Chief Exec of FGW about it, and my MP. It's a joke.
'Great Western'? Brunel must be spinning in his grave. This company couldn't run a Hornby train set, never mind a passenger service. They should be stripped of the franchise NOW!
Anyone else agree? Got any horror stories to share?

I own land and I have an old railroad bed in it. I want to remove it and take the rails to a scrap metal yard. Basically I would like to know how much a section of it weighs. This is a standard railroad bed like they use today. Not one of those old skinny ones. Also if I were to cut through it what kind of saw would I use? I know a plasma cutter would be best but I'm trying to save money. Also does anyone know what you would get per pound for the steel at a scrap yard? Thanks. Appreciate your answer.

I'm terrible with geography.

I tried to find my brother in Omaha, New Jersey, and sepnt the whole summer just lookin' for Omaha. Turns out, it's in Nebraska! I knew the State's name started with an "Ne," anyhow.

Next year I'm goin to the Statue of Eiffel. I think it's on Fire Island, in the middle of Hudon's Bay.

So, how close can I get to Witchita or Tulsa via Amtrak?

Call me a conspiricy theorist, but I heard a rumour that there was a secret store of steam locomotives (possibly in Wales) that the authorities have preserved for use in a national emergency, such as an energy crisis.

The story is that many locos that were supposedly scrapped years ago, are in fact in full working order.

Any opinions gratefully received.
