It is my first time taking a train.

Well, you can do either, but if you want the most flexibility and are not sure when you're travelling then buying at the station is the best way (where you can use credit cards or cash).
Online you can make reservations for trains which can be handy if you know exactly when you are travelling, and have enough advance notice. Online you can use American Express, Diner's Club, Discover, Mastercard or Visa (unfortunately they don't accept Paypal yet...;) !)

Depends on where you're going. Remember Amtrak no longer services Grand Central Station.
