In the USA, working for Amtrak, a conductor will earn about $55,000 per year basic. It is possible to earn much more working extra hours, within the safe limits set.
In the UK, pay can vary from about (US dollar equivalent) $40,000 up to $55,000 per year basic.
There's usually plenty of overtime to be had, and with some companies Sunday working is extra pay too.

NJ transit conductors were in the middle to high $20 back in 2005. left the railroad, ex worker.
