Are train fares going up because the train owners know that the financial companies in the cities will pay to get their workers to the office at any cost?

The government bang on about wanting people to take public transport but it is shocking, cars are so much more convenient and work out cheaper.

Recently my car was in the garage and I had to get the train to work, which is a 20 mile trip each way. In the car it cost me £4 a day in petrol and took half an hour from my doorstep to work. To use public transport took 2 buses to get to the train station and then 25 mins on the train.

I was gobsmacked when for a daily return ticket on the train I had to pay £8, this is just miles more expensive than a car.

And now train fares are going up yet again. It makes me so mad when I hear all these plans to charge motorists more road tax or plans to make motorists pay per mile in the future for how far they drive, yet they continually let rail companies take customers to the cleaners.
They are never even on time either!

I am fed up with it, its about time the government did something to make public transport competitive to the car!

I work in London, and have been hearing more and more rumours about a proposed hike in fare prices early next year. Does anyone else out there know about it, and is there a website saying how much and when etc?

Three weeks ago(Wednesday) I had to board a train without paying for a ticket with the intension of paying on the train, however northern rail send two carriages and it was packed to the rim so much that people who wanted to get on at at the last stop before everyone gets off couldnt get on. This is the busy time aswell. So I get off at salford crescent and was in a rush to get to my labs so a ran up the stairs thinking I don't want to be late. Saw the ticket inspectors when I got to top of stair case, turned around back the the ticket man on the station but one fo them ran after me and said wheres my ticket and I said i didnt have one and he said come with me so i gave him my details and went off. Got the letter though yesterday asking for a exsplaination, then goes on about legal stuff saying I could get a criminal record. For what!!!!!!!! I have broken a companies policy not the law! Anyone with any help on my situation will be handy.

About five years ago as I was getting off a commuter train in Grand Central Terminal in New York City, I saw a curious train. It had a standard Metro-North engine, but there were only two cars connected to it. The first car was decked out with several offices: leather interior, wooden desks, wall-to-wall carpeting. The second car was more of a bar / reception area. Both cars had the seal of the President of the United States. I was guessing that when Bill and Hillary Clinton were living in Westchester County, New York, that was the train Bill took to go to work in Manhattan. Does anyone know where I can find more about this train or know where I can find pictures of this? I have searched the Internet and I can't find anything.

On the railways I want to buy a ticket from UK including the boat (via Denmark) to Malmo. And I want to buy a ticket to Tallinn via Gothenburg, and Stockholm.
I do not wish to travel hundreds of miles out of my way by eurostar. Even when going to Paris I want to go overnight on a boat and have a proper sleep.
Why do the rail operators not sell inclusive international tickets to compete with low cost airlines ?

Hi I want to travel to covent garden from manchester and return a day later.
If i get the train at manchester piccadilly where is the first stop I can get off at to get the tube ?
It seems to be a lot cheaper doing it like that rather then getting the train all the way.
Any advice appreciated never travelled by train before.

As some of you know, I worked for a small railroad in New York. I moved out of state and got a warehouse job, but I want to keep my hand in the railroad game. There's a shortline in the area that told me, "Hey, we could use some weekend crews. Come by and fill out an application."

Well, I gave them my resume loaded with seven years of experience and a clean record, along with some really strong references. I've been calling them for weeks, unable to get a response on the status of my application. Tomorrow morning I'm going to play the rest of my cards and just walk in there, and I'm not sure what to expect. I know a background check doesn't take four weeks, and I know for fact they're shorthanded. What could be their reason for not contacting me again? Call me frustrated, but sheesh.

There're plans to close down your railway line at the end of the year because of the financial difficulties, this line connects with the main line to your capital city in one direction, and with a ferry to a nearby island in the other directin it is also vital for trasporting studrends to your college, as the train runs 30 minutes whereas the local bus service is very infrequent

The railroad websites I have checked emphasize that they will not guarantee any number of workdays during the period before conductors are assigned their own shift--while they are on the rotating board. This can go on for over a year. I would like to move into this field; the Norfolk Southern conductor trainee program sounds promising. But if you can't rely on making ANY set amount of money until you are off the fill in board, how do people break in? By being supported for a year or so by their significant other? By taking out loans as if you were going to college? I am 43 years old. Is considered too old to begin this line of work?

This morning Colborne/York Street London Ontario it was pretty close to an hour with trains back and forth and then one just sat still. I think it is totally disgusting in a big city like London with all the other detours - the stinkhole, I mean sinkhole etc., that trains are allowed to do this. I know they have a job to do, but people have to get to work too. This city needs a BIG, BIG shake up - AND SOON!!
