I'm from Australia and was just wondering if you can get an electric shock or even die from touching the wrong line???

Out in the open, when you hop a fence and run across the railway tracks I've never had electric shock, but I thought I've heard of people being hurt from it ??

Or is this only for subway trains??

Are there actually live tracks??

Some of us may remember pre-AMTRAK trains run by railroads and some of us may have ridden passenger trains in other countries. I fondly remember Santa Fe trains and trains in Japan and Belgium. I also enjoyed AMTRAK trains on the East Coast.

If there were more trains, and they were faster and more reliable and were affordable, would you park your Hummer and take a roomette for the night (and day?) (I would.)

And maybe planes, too, but that seems even less possible.

I'm traveling from California to Pennsylvania with Amtrak this holiday season, and I'm going to have my laptop with me... I was just thinking how cool it would be to have the Internet during that time!

I know the automatic knuckle coupler was adopted in the US for safety reasons. Why isn't a similar coupler used in the UK as well?

Right, I know this may seem daft. I know it is possible to Charter a train from certain Railway Companies for Private functions, weddings, Charity events, or Sporting Events, but does anone know how much it actually costs assuming all goes to plan? Is there a set number of people/customers, does it depend on the time of year eg. Season. Maybe more expensive near a Bank Holiday or over a weekend or even if you a particular wanting a Steam train for a 50th Birthday or wedding Anniversary etc.

Any information will be helpful!

Why do people call a subway a metro? I thought metro was short for metropolis, which is another name for city. Why does every city with a subway system insist on just calling it "the metro?"

For several months, I noticed from time to time that there would be burt out flares that had been placed directly on top of the rail road crossings in my area (Valrico Fl - CSX). Finally, one day I saw one that was still burning so I started driving from crossing to crossing. I came across a train that was going about 5mph. At each and every crossing, the train would pull to within about 10 feet of the signal but would not activate it. One of the guys would get out a flag the traffic to a stop and the other would drive the train through. This was a normal looking train with 2 modern 6 axles engines. Out of curiousity, I waited around about 20 minutes for the next train to see if it activated the crossings like normal, which it did. I thought the gates work on electrical resistance, but I don't get why this and at least a few other trains would not have activated them. Are they RF now or something?

I'm thinking of taking an Amtrak ride this week from Portland down to the Bay Area. This will be my first train ride. What are some people's experiences with trains? Is it a fairly smooth ride? Is it possible to sleep with all of the stops it makes? Thanks for any advice you can give.

On the London Overground (moreso than Underground, as my particular journey involves Overground) if I have a season ticket Zones 2-6, can I still go THROUGH zone 1? Even though i'm not getting off? Basically I want to go from Zone 2 South London, to Zone 2 North London, but the train will go through and stop at stations in Zone 1. Am I covered???
