Hi I want to travel to covent garden from manchester and return a day later.
If i get the train at manchester piccadilly where is the first stop I can get off at to get the tube ?
It seems to be a lot cheaper doing it like that rather then getting the train all the way.
Any advice appreciated never travelled by train before.

Assuming you'd get a Virgin West Coast express service to London then you can only realistically do it by getting off at Euston, taking Northern Line Charing Cross branch southbound to Leicester Square, then change there for Piccadilly Line to Covent Garden.
Having spoken to a friend of mine who often goes to London via Euston station, he would get the Tube to Leicester Square and then walk, it's apparently not very far at all.

The best way from Manchester Piccadilly to Covent Garden is to use Virgin rail services to London Euston and then take the Northern line (Charing Cross branch) to Leicester Square. Covent Garden is a short walk from Leicester Square station and avoids the crowds at Covent Garden tube station. Also, Covent Garden station is exit-only until December due to rebuilding work, so bear this in mind for your return journey.

I'm not sure why you think it would be 'a lot cheaper' to get off at the first station at which you can catch the Underground. If your train were to stop at Watford Junction you could get off there and catch 'the Overground' . that would cost you £59.70 for a saver return whilst one to Euston is £59.50! - and you have a far wider choice of services.

On a direct service to London you go to Euston Station which is where you can get the underground.

Yep, Euston-Piccadilly is the way to go. Make sure to buy your ticket well in advance (at least two weeks before you travel) if you can figure out a specific train to take because they're much cheaper that way.
