Why do they always seem to be middle aged overweight white guys who still live with their mothers? (or is this just a media stereotype)

Speaking for myself, I grew up watching trains. I prefer rail travel when I can. I have been involved with model railroading since I was 15. Yes, my Mom does live with us, (my wife and I). My grandson gets most of my trains when I pass away and my middle daughter played with trains when she was 11. 225 lbs, Welshman, 55 years old , Retired Military, Stereotypical? Maybe....

well
i am not sure about your exact stereotype but there are some rather eccentric people in railfans
normal people stay home watching
TV instead of driving around taking pictures of trains.
I joke, I am sure railfans come from most walks of life.
We have several railfans that work here, imagine that, your hobby being your job. They are delighted every time they get called to go to work and are always happy.
That would be like me having a hunting fishing beer drinking TV show LOL.

I really think it is infact just a media stereotype. I'm an overweight white guy who likes trains, and is a model railroader. But I live in my own apartment, that's all I'm saying.

I'm a member of several railroad organizations and amongst the ranks YES there are a disproportionate number of people you describe. The ones who are on their own away from mommy mostly live alone. The favorite term for these guys is TRAIN FOAMERS! Tune in: 160.230 on your FM dial. --IC

I'm middle aged, I'm not overweight and my mother died 40 years ago and I was married even before she passed away. Why are all sports fans overweight males with beer bellies?
