Buying & Selling - January 2007

They have the upper hand when you purchase them, when you lease them, and when you trade them in.
They depreciate a boatload when they are registered, when you drive them off the lot and when you try to trade them in...this is the worst...trade in. trade in means hurt me bad where you want in dealer language. i went to trade in and they told me my $45,000 truck which is a 4004 is only worth $19,000. Are they freakin' nutz.

Anyone knows how I can get cash for my car which didn't pass smog check? I could have gotten $1000 from the state but miss the opportunity to do it because I declare the car inoperative. It still runs but didn't pass smog check. I try everything to get it to pass. Will cost more to fix then to sell it. Any help would be great.

I know Epic (http://www.autoskill.net/dws/epic/index.htm) and Westside (http://verizonsupersite.com/westsideautorecyclingcom/faqs/ ) would take my car. But are these the best option out there.

I'm looking at buying either a Focus ST with the 2.3L (150hp) and performance suspension or the Saturn Ion with the performance pachage 2.4L (175hp), performance suspension etc... They are within 1/2 second of each other in 0-60 time. Which would you pick and why?

I bought a 2002 Grand Pri in 2004 and I realize cars deprecate but $14,000 in 2004 to what gee wiz not to $3,500.00 in 2007. I owe, I owe! It's a nice automobile and is uses nominal unleaded 87 octane.

I'm downsizing from a 2002 (E46) BMW M3, I need a hatchback ideally, or worst case an estate. I want something fairly fast, and decent looking. Around £12-£15K. Any suggestions?
I'm thinking Audi S3, or BMW M Coupe. Mini Cooper S is a bit small, and Civic Type R is a 'boy racer' car. I want a more 'grown up' car - not something that boy racers will covet. Maybe a Subaru WRX Wagon? Although they are as ugly as sin...

I know a lot of people don't like GM, but I'm looking for a car... and it more or less "has" to be a GM because I have family that works for a GM dealership... and I want to (1) Get a good deal (2) Not hurt anyone's feelings.

I've been looking around, and both the Pontiac Vibe and the Chevrolet Aveo (hatchback) look nice to me. They have good gas mileage (which is important) and from what I understand they're pretty spacious and flexible for their size. I'm aware that the Vibe is essentially a Toyota and the Aveo is a Daewoo.

So, my question is... is the Vibe worth the extra money? Or is the Aveo almost as good? Are there any other GM cars that you would recommend over these two? I'd like to stay in the $15,000 range (tops) and, like I said before, good gas mileage and a spacious interior are important to me.

If you object to the 4x4 on environmental grounds, does it become acceptable in your mind if I offset my carbon emissions?
What about if I converted it to LPG?

Does anyone have any view if the depreciation on 4x4s (particularly on the discovery) will be heavier in coming years?
