Why did a unit of measurement, the nautical mile, become widely used in marine navigation? Why use a measurement which is a different length than a standard statute mile?

I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks!

I'm bored with going to the same lakes over and over again. I know, how can some one get bored jetskiing? It's a delayed reaction. Hell of a time when I'm there, but always have the wish I'ld gone here or there instead. Plus, not too may others go with, or are out there. I've got two but by yourself bites! More fun with more people.

'87 Johnson 30 hp. Here's the problem. When I first take off the engine runs great. After about 5 minutes it will power down and start cutting out. I'll back off on the throttle to around 1800 rpm and it will run fine. If I throttle up on it gently it will act like it is missing, if I open it up the motor revs to about 2000 rpm and dies back then revs again. Some times it will clear up for a time and run fine only to do it again after a few minuts. I'm not a boat motor guy, but it seems to me that it is starving for gas. Could it be my fuel pump is going bad?

Most companies, selling canoes and small boats, in the States only ship in the States. Thus I need to organise a personal shipment; and that is my problem.

If I provisioned my bluewater sailboat with a water maker, and stores upon stores of food ( say 6 months worth ) and set sail with just a compass and the knowledge that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.. Would I ever see land again? Is it possible to just go and get lost and have great fun and adventure along the way?
