I am interested in buying a "family" boat - just something to get us out on the water, enjoying the sun, etc. However, some of the local places (lakes in the state forest) allow only electric motors - no gasoline engines. In other words, a trolling motor. Of course, this is fine for a row boat or bass boat (for fishing), but can a trolling motor push a pontoon boat through the water? Thanks!

The Best way to do it,is buy a pontoon with 2 motors on it.. A pontoon moves thru the water much easier than a normal boat so you can get away with Lower horsepower engines.. and theres no reason a trolling motor wont work.. but when your on a lake where Motors are allowed.. I feel you wont be satisfied with a trollingt Motor alone... a 9.9 does a good job.. you can just tilt it up when on a electric motor lake.. in some cases rarely but you may be required to remove the prop...Good Luck

It will move your pontoon but not very fast. trolling motors power is based on thrust where as gasoline engines are determined by horsepower. Also if your pontoon is steel tubes forget it. the other thing that may be a problem is the steering. most trolling motors are manualy steered by hand, most pontoon boats do not have a rear deck to navigate on. hopes this helps..

yes a troll motor will push or pull a pontoon boat.....make sure the trust power of the troll motor is around 32 or 37...but the battiers probly will not last long.....and one more thing, if the wind is high or choppy water i would not attempt it....but on a calm eve i would think you would be ok.....

Sure it can. You won't be going very fast but a pontoon displaces less water than some smaller v-hull or tri-hull boats and they are not usually very heavy. Could be a nice, quiet, & pleasant cruise.
