NY State deposited my check already (what I owed), but Federal has not. How long usually until they deposit my check (take money away)?

And when they do, does it mean, I've done my taxes properly?

The year the wife was abandoned, she was able to claim her daughter as a dependent and also filed as HOH. The following year the daughter was only in school 4 months (not the required 5 to be a qualified child.) In this case would the wife file as Single or MFS?
Thanks

My wife (as of '06) omitted a major portion of her salary for 2005 taxes, because it was received as a stipend as a fellow on an NIH training grant. Her university was not allowed to take out taxes, and up until April 2005 it was debateable whether NIH-NRSA postdoctoral trainees are subject to FICA and medicaire withholding (the IRS now says it is). So we just got a letter now telling us she is liable for taxes on an extra $45000 salary (apparently they haven't gotten to our 2006 taxes yet, since it will be the same for that year).
Apparently some of her co-fellows claimed (to tax authorities, on the advice of their employer) to receive the stipend as a loan, which they pay back with health-related service in the years after the loan.
We have until May 16 to get back to the IRS, and we are not sure what to do. She did not knowingly do anything wrong, and H&R Block did nothing to help us, even though they signed off on it... If we have to, we'll pay, but it's a lot of money...

If I claim 0 allowances on my W4 (Fed) and 0 allowances on my VA-4 (State) then how do you calculate how much tax is actually withheld from claiming 0 allowances on each tax?

I was curious if it was a standard percentage or a table or something else and where I could find it for my state (VA) and Fed. Thanks for your help!

Been searching with no luck. I know I have to file them (got the default 2 month extension for those abroad).

Anyway... I'm married to a foreign national (nonresident alien). IRS says I can file one of three ways, joint, single, head of household. Problem is, all require my spouse have a tax number, which isn't the case. In fact, I see no reason to report my spouse's income as she has no obligations to the US.

Anyone know how to file in this case? Thanks

My brother has been doing my taxes for years. He’s a CPA and is really good at his job. I slacked on doing my taxes with him and so I had to mail them out late. I told him I was nervous about mailing them in to the IRS late but he told me that since I was getting a refund that I should not worry about it, and with his experience he has never heard of anyone getting in trouble for turning them in that late while getting refund. Should I trust him?

Are fees paid to a prime contractor to allow our company to receive a contract under one of their existing contracts deductible? For example, we submit a bid to the prime contractor for $120,000 to perform the project. The prime contractor receives this $120,000 from the government for the services we are performing, but only gives us a subcontract for $100,000 to perform what we have estimated would take $120,000. Is this $20,000 "fee" we are having to pay this prime contractor a business expense and tax deductible?

Thanks,

In the UK we get loads of taxes (income tax, council tax, national insurance, etc)

For a basic salary in the UK the government takes 33% in tax.

I work in a cash only business. I made about 43,000 in cash last year. How much taxes will I be expected to pay? I am single with no children. I figure I need to file because I put 20,000 in my savings account this year and bought a house.

I know I missed the deadline for filing taxes. Is it possible to get an extension without getting penalized?

I had to pay Fed taxes and sent payment on the last day (to their San Francisco branch). The lines were too long so I didn't get a confirmation receipt. Is there a way to find out if they received payment (aside from waiting for the bank to clear the check)?

I'm planning on working 3 jobs this year. I'm a full time student and I should get about $10,000 altogether at the end of the year. I understand both arguments on too much and too little tax being withheld (get refund check in Spring or get as much back now and earn interest)

Few questions: What should I withhold (recommendations and options)? Usually I've put "Exempt" but I don't think I'm legally able to now that I'm making above $5,350.

I've seen the statement of 0 allowances being the maximum tax withheld but how do I figure out what percentage that would be?

Thanks so much for your help. It is much appreciated!
