I have client who was supposed to contribute to a pension plan, but one the employees argued with the pension lan and my client (the company), stopped making payments and later, the employee unfortunately got fired.

The terminated employee got the union involved and it was determined that my client owes $97K to the employee. My client wants to make this contribution to a new pension plan and I would like to know if this contribution made to this new pension plan on behalf of the terminated employee, will be taxable to the terminated employee? And what authority can I use to back up any conclusion(s)?

I did my own taxes for the first time this year. Using tax software, I plugged in what my refund would be if I had no stock sales in 2006. BTW, my tax bracket is 15% and I'm in New York.

Without Capital Gains:

Federal Refund : $400 and State Refund : $1460

Capital Gains of only $4416.

Federal : $260 (I owe) and State Refund : $1037

According to an online Capital Gains calculator I used, my Federal tax should be $662 (which explains why my refund went from $400 to minus $260). What I can't understand is why my State refund dropped so drastically.

I am from Australia and I am setting up a web based business in the US. The sole revenue source will be adsense and YPN. If I were to incorporate in Delaware, would this be considered taxable as Google and Yahoo are both incorporated in Delaware. I will technically not be doing any business in Delaware other than incorporating. Is it better to incorporate outside of Delaware in this case.... such as Wyoming?

I'm still in college, and I lost my tax forms, plus my dad, who did them, said I owe the government about $200. So I was supposed to send them with a check, I guess. But I didn't send anything at all. Do I only get in trouble if they randomly happen to select my taxes for review and discover they're missing, or is my name automatically on the "did not receive taxes" list?

What do I do? Do I lie low and hope nobody notices, or send them in really late and then have anyone who receives them KNOW I send it in late?

I want to be left with $5K after taxes. 33% is the total tax rate.

33% tax on $5K is $1.5K.

But, If I wanted to be left with $5K, to say that I'd have to make a total of $6.5K to pay the taxes doesn't calculate correctly because if I made 6.5K, the tax rate of 33% would apply to that total, which leaves me with $4,355. So, the 1.K seems to shortchange the taxes, I'd otherwise pay.

I calculate I'd have to make $7,426.69 to be left with $5K. 33% of the 7K figure is roughly 5K.

Yet, it seems when I read about taking tax breaks that would mean I wouldn't have to pay tax on $5K, third-parties just seem to say I'd save $1.5K. Is this just laziness or ignorance on their part, or am I wrong by trying to take into account what I want to be left with not just what I'd pay on the amount.

And is there an economic term that accounts for this?

If there is, why do business/finance writers just say you'd save 1.5K on 5K of income, not that you'd save 2.5K to be left with 5K?

I am selling a condo for $200,000 on the east coast. I purchased it 3 years ago for $85,000. I lived in it the last three years. I plan to sell it and move to the Mid west where I plan to buy a house for between $110,000-$150,000.

How does the capital gain tax work? Will I have to pay taxes on $115,000 for the difference between buying and selling price on condo? or will i only be taxed on the difference bewteen selling price of condo and buying price on house in the Mid west?

Please help.

has anyone ever had a similar experience? The IRS said that I'd receive a notice in a few days explaining why the amount is different. They also said if I'm certain the amount is too high, to return the check explaining why. I have no idea as to why they sent me so much more, but I'd sure like to keep it. What's the chances that the IRS is right? Is it interest that they're paying me? It says interest on their check.

House sold 7/06 for $700K
Original purchase price $267 4/02
Improvements $106K (basis = 373,000)
Widowed 3/96 house value at the time was $390K
Question: Does this mean I have to pay taxes on 700,000- (.5X373=186,500) - (.5X390=195,000)-250,000=68,500?
Worried...Thank-you

I've been on a work visa in the USA for about 8 years now and have about $60,000 in my 401K. My work Visa is up next March and I'll have to return to Canada.

I know there is a 10% withholding tax if I withdraw it but if it is in a low income year (as I will only work 3 months) is that going to be less than the flat 30% tax that will be taken out if I remove it as a non-resident?

I know that leaving it in an IRA making tax free returns is a decent option but I'd rather move it elsewhere and want to get the most I can out of the money I've saved.

My friend is an accountant and she filed my tax forms before the deadline. Unfortunately, I have to send it myself. I'm a bit of a forgetful, sadly, and a disorganized individual. I'm too busy with too many things happening this month alone. Anyhow, I have yet to send the tax form and I was wondering what will be the consequences of sending out the 1040 and 540 tax forms late?
