You can't write off sales tax. I am guessing you mean you've written off collection of the money from whatever you sold. IF you can claim a credit for sales tax at all, the rules would vary by state.

If you itemized deductions and deducted sales tax instead of state and local income taxes, your total tax on your return would have been decreased.
