Once you are witholding money for taxes on your own (in an account earning interest), do you just pay your bill at the same time as everyone else is getting a refund?

My grandfather typically doesn't file a return because he receives only a small pension and is not required to. He received some 1099-C (cancelation of debts) this year; does that cause him to file a return to report the 1099-C? If so, this will cause a significant tax due which he will not be able to afford on his limited income. Any suggestions?

What do you do when the non custodial parent wrongfully claimed the children as dependents and filed their tax return first. My E-file was rejected because my dependants had already been claimed. I am legally entitled to claim them as dependants. should I mail in a 1040 along with a copy of the portion of my Decree stating the fact and or do i need a form signed by my ex-spouse releaseing interest?

She just gave back my w2 form yesterday and said she had already filed and claimed all of the deductions we had. She is a real estate agent and does not pay her taxes when they are due, I on the other hand pay taxes on every check and on top of that have paid her $65,000 in support this year. She says I now owe $14,000 to the irs. I know she lied on her return not to mention she hasn't left me much time to file on my own. what recourse do I have. Can I request an audit?

While living in VA my hubby had 65.00 pretax taken out from each check to pay premiums for an HMO provided by his employer. Then we moved to GA and have 150 pretax taken out from each check to pay a premium for a PPO. Can we deduct the payments taken from each check to pay for these premiums? I read somewhere it says if its included in box A of the W-2, but that just says wages, tips, etc. How do you know if it was included?

I am currently working as a full-time employee and take 2 deductions on a salary of about 65k. I recently took on a few freelance jobs that will give me an additional 7-10k income, which are paid at a flat fee w/o taxes taken out. I'm worried because I hear that freelancers end up owing thousands in April because nothing is taken out initially (compared to a full-time job). What can I expect next tax season?

I rent instruments for both of my kids' music classes. Is this rental money tax deductible? It doesn't seem to fit under education expenses, but I'm hoping I'm wrong. Anyone know?
Thanks!

Does anyone have any insight on how to obtain historical stock prices? Unfortunately (don't ask), I do not have a record (stock price) of my initial MBNA purchase in 1993 - yikes! FYI: I've been told by National City and Computershare they no longer have this data nor keep this information.

My mother-in-law and her husband of 3 years have not filed their taxes for the same amount of time. I do not believe they owe any money, but now have they lost any refunds they were due? What kind of trouble can they expect from the IRS? Is there anything I can tell them to get the fire lit to file this year?

I filed my federal taxes back in Jan, I didn't file my state taxes right away and I got another w-2 in the mail. I had to amend my federal taxes. Since I didn't do my state taxes when I did my federal I don't have to amend those ( i worked in 2 states) I just have to file them. Does anyone know of an online program that doesn't make you file your federal with your state, and will let you prepare and file state only?

I am a security guard and my employer gave me a 1099-misc instead of a w-2. He did not take out any taxes during the year. Should this reported on line 7 of the w-2 as regular wages or should it be on line 12 with business income (which would mean a schedule c and self employment tax)?

I'm asking this for a friend, so I'll try to get all info correct. He worked 2 jobs in 2003 and never filed his taxes for that year. His total income was $7,062.66. About $350 worth of federal taxes were withheld and $90 for state. His filing status is single. Should he go ahead and file for that year? I would think he would have been entitled to almost a full refund, since his wages were minimal. Since 3 years have past would there be a penalty since it's a refund? OR is he even required to file at this amount. If he wouldn't receive any penalties then I know he wants to file, but if he would and he's not required to file then he won't. Any help would be appreciated. 10pts to most comprehensive (correct) answer. THanks!
