It would be helpful if you listed which country you're doing taxes for - the rules vary greatly.

Something sufficient to show what the payment was for so it can be identified as eligible for deduction. For example, a receipt that just has an amount, but nothing to show what it was for, would need some kind of written record made at the time of what was purchased.
