my friend got a job as a server.

they pay him $2.13 an hour plus tips.

they said he suppose to turn in all tips on the end of his shift so they can deduct taxes from it. he gets his tips back at paycheck time.

is this normal? and how much do they take out? there is no state income tax, just federal.

me and my girl live in a new home, it is paid off and is in her fathers name. her father is terminally ill and upon his death the house goes into her name. we live in this house now. the house is valued at 280,000 and we wish to sell it immediately upon it becoming hers and buy something around 200,000. what will we be taxed on the 80,000 difference. do we have to reinvest the money from the house into a property of equal value. is there a capital gains tax? how could we go about doing this and what will happen if we do?

i am in a band which is formed as a partnership, and this is the first year we will be filing a partnership return. i am having some trouble on a few particular issues i can't find any specific information about...... since they are pretty specific, i probably need to speak with a professional, unless some of you have had similar experiences with being in a band. if so i can email them, because they won't fit here.

are there any pro-bono artist/musician tax advisers / organizations????

ok, it's been a while since I had to do this myself. Here is the question: when figuring my standard deduction (filing jointly) how do I figure this. Do I just put in the amount or do I multiply it by the number of dependents we have? Lets say the standard is $10k and we have 5 children. How do I figure the deduction?

With certain tax law changes since the beginning of 2007, my CPA is having to correct my taxes several times. It doesn't seem right that the govt can change tax laws several times during tax season. Other than "because they are the govt," how come they can tamper with tax laws during tax season.

This is my first year filing income from a 1099-Misc and have a very simple (possibly dumb) question:

I'm looking at a 1099-Misc form from the business I worked for and the dollar figure on it only accounts for what they paid me through December '06. Is that the correct cutoff date for 2006 tax year income reported on a 1099-Misc?

Thanks so much!

Why does everyone hate the IRS? I don't get it.

There was this person complaining on here earlier about having an online business that crashed in 2000 along with alot of other companies and as a result, he has to pay the government extra money every year with interest because he owes them money he was unable to pay because he had to declare bankruptcy.

First off, if you go bankrupt, it's YOUR fault. No one else is to blame.

Secondly, the government needs that money to pay for schools and other programs. The IRS is a good thing.

I know that occasionally the IRS may fine people too much money and charge too much interest, but how do they expect people to pay them back if they don't take aggressive measures?

Also, if you have a business, you need to incorporate it. This guy didn't do that. It was his fault and to all the other whiners out there, I have one thing to say:

Shut up and pay the money and fines. It's YOUR fault for getting into debt.

What do you think?
