TaxAct said I should expect $60 for my state return. Today I received my check and it's only $9.....what the hell?

This was my first time filing taxes so I'm kind of lost on what to do here. Please help!

The state will send you a letter shortly explaining the difference. It's not unusual for your refund to arrive before the letter does, especially if you e-filed and chose Direct Deposit of your refund.

Generally there are 2 reasons to receive a refund for less than you claimed. The first is a math error on your return. That doesn't happen with computer software. The second is part of your return was taken to pay something you owe the state. This could include back child support or taxes. It is also possible a deduction or credit was disallowed. That usually is not caught by this time. Contact your state tax department, sometimes called the department of revenue, and ask them why your refund was changed.

1. If the return went in with $60.00 indicated, there should be some letter of explanation of why it was so much smaller, HOWEVER,
2. If you filed through TaxAct, are you sure they didn't keep a filing fee (it would have to be a whopper, but ...).

First off, that is bull. TaxAct isnt all it's cracked up to be, my mom used it said she'd get 4 grand back for taxes, she got just over 3 grand. Don't really worry about it this year, but next year go to H&R Block or something.
