Medical expenses, including orthodontic work, that exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income are tax deductible. You cannot include the amounts paid by insurance, however.

If you itemize deductions, you can claim unreimbursed medical expenses to the extent they exceed 7.5% or your AGI. If insurance paid for the braces, you can't claim them. If braces are your only medical expense, they probably won't be worth much as a deduction.

Braces would qualify as a dental (medical) expense deduction, but you can only take the portion that you paid that's more than 7.5% of your income, and even then you can only deduct it if you itemize.
